Hey everyone!
Super excited to be bringing you another monthly journal, documenting everything we’ve been working on behind the scenes for the Community Edition Project. In case you missed the last one, you can read it here.
So, what’s been happening this past month?
Firstly, we had a very exciting visit from Astrid and Kenta. The London-based duo happen to be spending some time in Japan this summer, so they made the journey over for a couple of jam-packed days.
The main event was a prototype review session with Adam Bates and Lucy Birley at our London Design Studio. In the weeks leading up to the meeting, the team had agreed on some prototypes to be produced. During the session (which was about three hours long!), Astrid, Kenta, Lucy and Adam analysed the prototypes and discussed the different luminescent material options that could make it into the final design. Different options produced different results, and the team had to keep going in and out of a dark cupboard to see the luminescence in action!
Then, they tried many different combinations of tinted back panels with the different luminescent colours. I was amazed at how long they could talk about materials! They finally arrived at some decisions of which prototypes will be produced next…
Excitingly, whilst Astrid and Kenta were in London, we also happened to announce Andrés as our Stage 2: Wallpaper Design winner. Andrés is an Art Director from Spain, and has been an excellent collaborator on the project so far! We invited all three of our winners onto a call to discuss the co-creation process so far, their inspirations, and how they plan to co-create together now that both of their winning concepts are evolving.
Andrés has been having weekly virtual working sessions with Mladen and Ken from our Software Team, and I’ve heard that there has been some great progress made in developing the design of the four wallpapers…
The team at Nothing wants to give a huge shoutout to everyone who took the time to create and submit their wallpaper concepts, and to the community’s favourite submissions from Stage 2: Wallpaper Design!
@Rahul impressed us with his series of light paintings, with After Glow. You can watch the video he created, documenting the process of making these wallpapers.
And @ꙮ Andrei - who created a series of wallpapers using Astrid and Kenta’s design as inspiration. “Luminescence, phosphorescence, iridescence - they are all the same, in essence.”
@RaduBratan - who used the four competition stages as inspiration and created some incredible well thought out cartoon-style wallpapers!
And last but not least, @yajatyadav - who took the design philosophy and coil design of Phone (2a) and added a fluorescent spin to the design!
Now, this leads us on to Stage 3: Packaging Design. Community voting is now open here until 28th June! Be sure to cast your vote - you only get one, so use it wisely to let our internal jury know which design you’d love to see get made.
Keep an eye out for our winner announcement in the coming weeks, and stay tuned for the announcement of Stage 4: Marketing Campaign…
Thank you for reading this monthly journal! Let me know your thoughts on the project so far in the comments ⬇️
