I recently received my ear (1)s and i’m loving them. I want to see this young company be successful. Any new product is vulnerable to criticism in the short run, which can be addressed in the long run. For some, EQ has been a hot button topic as i’ve seen on YouTube, Twitter, etc out of the gate.
That said, think it would be great for the team to reach out to ‘subreddit experts/mods’ or reviewers with serious street cred for refining the EQ of their product. If you embrace the experts in the online community, the quality of the product is much better vetted for both average consumers and power users.
Audio is far too often subjective, which makes it such a hot topic. Doing so in product development would help nothing get ahead of even the most particular of experts pre-launch.
I’ve seen flashes of this stuff on the internet work for cult-following products, both of which I ended up buying and using daily. Here are some examples:
—
Example 1: Crinacle
As someone who’s really into bang for the buck IEMs, Crinacle (https://crinacle.com) really stands out to me as a reviewer (which all YouTubers and redditors pile on top of for content). The most recent example of community-sourced perfection was with Crinacle’s project with Moondrop, which you can read about here.
Example 2: Alan Ross & Mr Cow
Another example that stands out as a consumer was the SoundCore Motion Plus. This speaker is infamous for crowdsourced tuning to make it punch way above its weight. I’m talking on Bang and Olufsen and Bowers and Wilkins level. Reviewers like Alan Ross (see tuning video) and Mr Cow (see tuning video) have done a great job EQing these speakers for the community – something that SoundCore doesn’t even acknowledge for themselves yet! I’d love to see them help out on ear (1).

I don’t know anything about tuning, but I know what life-changing sound feels like. And I know I rely on the reddit Hifi and Head Fi communities to lead me in the right direction to uncover what’s what. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.
And maybe on top of it all, it’ll be an awesome opportunity for nothing to lead with the best of the ‘internet underground’. All the rest of the competition created products of the ‘pre internet’ era. This is just another way nothing can be the first brand creating products ‘of the internet’.
