Hey Community!
We’ve made it to August - somehow, after 5 months, we’re halfway through the final stage of the Community Edition Project!
Last week, we welcomed an exciting group of guests to our London HQ and Design Studio. @Astrid and @Kenta, the Stage 1: Hardware Design Winners; @Andres_123 , the Stage 2: Wallpaper Design Winner; and @Ian_H_Simmonds, the Stage 3: Packaging Design winner.
This was the first time that our winners so far had met each other in person. They all had a very exciting prototype review session at our Design Studio with CMF Design Lead, Lucy, and were able to give even more feedback on details such as button colour and the tint level on the back of the phone.
Once again, there were many trips into the dark cupboard in the corner of the studio to see the glow-in-the-dark decals in action. It did not disappoint, but I won’t spoil anything…
After the review session, Andrés, who had flown to London from Spain, sat with @Ken and Mladen for a long co-creation session, refining the suite of wallpapers that will come pre-installed on the Phone (2a) Community Edition when it launches.
I had a peek at their Figma files, and there are almost a hundred iterations of different wallpapers that they’ve prototyped and amended over the weeks. Now that the hardware has developed further, the software team and Andrés can move closer and closer towards a final wallpaper collection!
And Ian, who designed the winning Packaging Design concept, talked through packaging options with Head of Brand & Creative, @Ryan, since the team are quickly producing more renders and soon, prototypes, of his design, which you can read more about here.
A huge shoutout to everyone that submitted a design for Stage 3: Packaging Design - and to some of the community’s favourite submissions…
Emre & Andrea - Into Glow
The duo, based between London and Milan, worked together to create a concept that combined “sleek, materials with neon-green accents and intricate circuitry patterns. Inspired by the mesmerizing glow of bioluminescent jellyfish and the sophisticated allure of digital matrices, our design aims to fit with the inspiration of previous stage winners, but also live within the current NOTHING packaging family.”
Louis and Ambrogio - A Microworld of Bioluminescence Unveiled: Linking Technology and Biology
Another duo created a very cool concept combining insects and scientific elements: “like a diorama in real size, a microworld of bioluminescence to explore, viewed in a Petri dish like under a microscope, made up of fascinating natural bioluminescent animal organisms (zooplankton) and plant organisms (phytoplankton), which together represent the invisible biological chemical energy that allows the phone 2a to light up without the need for anything else.”
Vivek - Fusion
And finally, Vivek’s design “showcases the dual nature of the phone—its luminous presence in daylight and mysterious glow in the dark—harmoniously and practically. It features embossed translucent shapes inspired by the winning wallpaper design, seamlessly integrating the brand’s aesthetic and effectively representing the phone’s duality.”
So, what’s next? Stage 4: Marketing Campaign closes very soon, on 2 August 2024, 5pm BST - so if you’ve got a creative idea for how you would showcase the Phone (2a) Community Edition to the world, be sure to submit your treatment here!
Community voting will open on 5th August to help our jury decide on our final winner. When that happens, the marketing assets will go into production with support from our Brand & Creative team. Behind-the-scenes, we’ll be preparing the production lines to assemble the hardware; implementing the wallpapers into Nothing OS; and begin printing the packaging - getting everything ready to launch and sell (2a) Community Edition in the coming months!
A huge thank you to everyone who has entered The Community Edition Project so far. We can’t wait to show you everything!
