A Community Call: Extend Nothing Phone Updates

I just wanted to bring up something that’s important regarding software updates for Phone (1). A lot of us are still using it because it just works. It has everything we need, and with its 778G+ chip, it’s still a solid phone that can handle updates like Android 16 without any issues. It feels like Phone (1), being the device that started it all, deserves a bit more attention. It was Nothing’s gateway to success, and extending its OS and security updates would mean a lot to the users who’ve stuck with it.
Of course, Phone (2) users would benefit from extended updates too. Supporting both phones shows Nothing values its users long-term.

I don’t know what other’s think about this, should we push for this together?

Honestly, they should just give us a final Android 16 update and call it a day.

You always have a custom roms for snapdragon devices.

vovan-v. Yeah, custom ROMs are an option, but they require a bit of technical know-how, and i think not everyone is ready for that. Most people just want official updates for stability and security without the hassle. That’s why extending updates for phones would make more sense for the majority of users.

And if Nothing extends support for phone (1) everyone will demand the same for all the other phones because there’s precedent.

sean (1) - I echo your thoughts. It sets a dangerous precedent if they start extending.

I don’t pretend to know the ins and outs, but I am sure that Snapdragon only support the chips up to a certain Android build too. There is every chance these decisions are out of Nothing’s hands.

well, we already getting 3 major and 4 year of security updates. I think that is enough. may be with phone 3 , we might get more of it. even samsung used to give 3 or 4 years of update. now only they extended it even pixel. plus it depends on hardware too. I think this is sufficient. even with 3 years update we can work it for 5 years or so. and hardware for phones is chosen after deciding how many updates brand wants to give. even if they decide to push 1 more major update, who will be responsible if phone starts to lag? people will complain this is lagging that is lagging. fix it etc etc. like I used my samsung j2 for 4 or 5 years and it only gave 1 major update.

Jay phone 1 is lagging now as well after November update performance is decreased drastically and stability as well and battery backup is ruined after Android 14 update on the device and not only mine almost everybody’s device battery backup is affected

Theoretically, getting Android updates for three years is sufficient. After three years of use, it’s time to buy a new smartphone. However, there’s another point. Four months ago, I bought a brand new, sealed Nothing Phone (1) for $200. I’d like to upgrade not only to Android 15 but also to Android 16.))
