Im really sorry to see that you’ve lost one of your earbuds.
There are currently 2 methods of finding them, one of those is the ping feature that you’ve already tried. This only works for close proximity location and the buds have to be connected. If, as you’ve mentioned, they’ve ran out of battery or they’re not connected, this will not work.
The other method is using Google Find Device which will show the last connected location.
