Meet Nothing Laptop (2) - Inspired by TE Design
Some of you may be familiar with the original laptop concept that i did, believe it or not that was over a year ago! 😲
I was also fortunate enough to have it featured in a video 🙏
Within the past year i’ve created many other concepts and gained much more experience using blender. It’s been great looking back at my previous works and seeing the development. I’ve worked hard to improve my entire concept design process and not just the quality of the end result but also the way i get there. Part of that is taking more time to research existing designs for inspiration.
I’ve wanted to revisit/reinvent my original laptop design for a while now, but i only dive into a concept if im passionate about the idea i have. If im not, then i simply won’t do it!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Teenage Engineering, they make some incredible audio products, and their design language is very much industrial. One of their products in particular - K.O.II a 64MB sampler composer - really stood out to me with its display, metallic looking body, and contrasting accent colours and dials.
This stuck with me so much i even have it as my current wallpaper on my phone. I decided to use this as the foundation of my Nothing Laptop (2) design.
Then was the matter of transparent elements. It’s very easy to make something transparent and call it inspired by Nothing, but transparency should still have meaning and be tasteful. I opted for a frosted finish on the palm rest which blends nicely into the rest of the design - this is a finish i’ve been experimenting with for a while now. It reacts in a really nice way under the light while still highlighting the components underneath.
While this concept has focused heavily on design, there are some features to note:
- Fingerprint scanner
- Dedicated Macro Keys
- Customisable keys with mini displays - this could cover some of the missing function row, boot some of your favourite apps or even be used for streaming. There are a number of possibilities.
- Low res notifications banner - this could be used to show events, news, weather and much more.
