Many micro scratches

Hello to all,

I now have my Phone(1) since a few weeks. I wanted to use my phone without any protection (no protective shell and without film / screen protection, I removed the pre-installed plastic film). The smartphone is supposed to be gorrila glass 5 but I observe many micro scratches on the screen! I have a big doubt about the durability of the screen after only a few weeks of use!

My previous phone was a OnePlus 7 Pro which was also in Gorrilla Glass 5 and used without any protection. Used for almost 4 years and no such scratches visible!

How is this possible?

Also, Glyph encourages us to put our phone face down on a surface so it’s not going to get any better.

I am a careful person and just want to use the phone in its “raw” state.

When did you noticed the scratches? What caused them? Keys for example?

sean (1) No no I am very careful, it is always in my pocket (without anything inside my pocket) or on the table face down. For me either I have a problem with my screen, or the screen is not at all good for using Glyph …

Oh dear. I’m too clumsy not to have a case but was about to take off the plastic protector that came on the screen because there’s too much glare and it’s a magnet for fingerprints. Now I’m worried about scratches at it floats around my purse.

There must be something in your pocket or on the table, because the scratches aren’t coming from nowhere. The glass should be resilient to most everyday things, but it’s worth looking again at what might be the cause. Keys? Metal cardholder? A zip? Coins?

On the other hand, to be honest these scratches are only visible under certain angles in the sun but I never had this kind of concern with my old phone even after +3 years of use without a shell and without a screen protection film …

sean (1) No, I don’t have any of those things. My pockets are empty and contain only my phone. Maybe sometimes there is a little dust on the table where I put my phone. But what surprises me is that I always had the same use with my old phone (OnePlus 7 Pro) and I don’t have any scratches like that! I really have a big doubt about the gorilla glass 5 of the nothing phone(1)

Did you keep your 7 Pro face down on the table? Just to rule it out – might your table top have metal filings or gemstone sand on it?

sean (1) I did it less than with the nothing phone since the OnePlus 7 Pro did not have a “Glyph” interface. No my table is made of plastic coated wood and is clean.

I’ve just researched this for you and found an article on The Verge that explains the tempering process that makes glass less breakable also makes the glass easier to scratch. Don’t know how reliable the information is, but I’m going to presume the frontside of phone (1) uses thinner glass than that used for the 7 Pro, and the extra tempering it requires is making the glass easier to scratch than that on the 7 Pro.

I recommend using a protector to prevent scratches.
