My view of Nothing is that they are a software and pr company that happen to make phones (as well as other things). Pei has said something similar to this, though not so explicitly, which made me wonder whether we will ever see Nothing OS be released as a standalone product. When I strip away all the gimmicks that Nothing leverages to sell it’s products (glyphs, transparency etc), it seems that what remains is the unique UI experience of Nothing OS. I for one would welcome this decision, though I dont know how viable it is as a business idea to simply sell an OS (you can certainly buy licences for all manner of software products from Adobe, Autodesk, etc). The reason we all know about Nothing OS is because of the phones, but now we do the phones become redundant. It’s a fantasy, but I love the idea that Nothing would get rid of hardware production completely (leaving literally ‘Nothing’ left) and focus on the ephemerality of the software, as well as maybe release excellent products like the Nothing Ear, and other perhaps less conventional things. It seems Nothing is a truly unique company that understands what being a tech a company in today’s landscape can be and are perhaps the only company radical enough to even entertain these ideas.
