Having spent over two months with the Nothing Phone (2a), courtesy of the Nothing insiders program, I’ve witnessed its remarkable evolution. Frequent OTA updates (almost weekly updates) have polished this device (we got prototype units) into a product that stands tall and proud for any Nothing aficionado.
In this generation of Shorts & Reels, let me keep my review a bit crisp and to the point. Directly jumping to Pros & Cons of the device.
Pros:
- Unique Design: The transparent back design is not less than an art, that’s the least I can say. The glyph lights are not only distinctive but seems practical (while not used till now as the prototype came with a non-removable opaque case hiding the design), adding a subtle flair without being intrusive or at your face, personally my preference over Phone (1) & (2).
- Nothing OS: Nothing OS continues to impress with its smoothness and lack of bloatware or ads, a rarity in this price range. The OS works butterly smooth on Phone (2a) as well, no different from Phone (2). Big win!!!
- Enhanced Camera Experience: Clearly a big camera upgrade over Phone (1). Attaching some sample shots (unedited, point & shoot) from my recent trip where it was my main shooter. The repositioned camera eliminates table wobble, provides a natural resting spot for your finger, and prevents accidental lens coverage.
- Lightweight: Noticeably lighter than its predecessors. A big win. Community feedback maybe /\
- Widgets: The way widgets are evolving & expanding, they are no less than pokemons. Pedometer, NothingX, Media my favourite widgets.
- Battery Life: Outlasts Phone (2) with ease, offering up to 1.5 days of usage on a single charge. Normally, I get max 1 day on Phone (2)
- Value for Money: It hits the sweet spot in terms of price and functionality, covering all the basics flawlessly. Truly a phone for everyone.
Cons:
- Processor: It’s a step down from the Phone (2)'s Snapdragon 8gen, but ya that’s what “a” phones supposed to do. Given the price, it’s competitive and quite capable. Handles day-to-day tasks flawlessly. Obviously, can’t be compared to the powerhouse Phone (2)
- Color Options: White is class apart, the black model lacks appeal to me; grey like Phone (2) could have been better. Hope is someday Nothing will launch pastel colours for their phones
- No Charger Included: A miss particularly in this price & customer segment, though a discounted charger bundle could be a good fix.
- Lacks Dedicated Macro Mode: A minor gripe, not a big thing, but just for the count
In summary, Phone (2a) is a big thumbs up from me and an easy recommend. Planning to buy the white one for a family member. Eyeing for launch offers.
In all, Phone (2a) gonna be very popular, considering the package it offers and that too at this price. The Irony of Popularity: Its biggest downside? Its inevitable popularity means it won’t be long before you see it everywhere around you 😛
