I’ve had the amazing pleasure of using a prototype unit of Phone(2a) as a daily driver since late December with my use case being centred around using the device for communication, media consumption and socials. Previously Phone(1) has been my main device running the Nothing OS ecosystem is something I’m already familiar with and enjoy using. With Phone(2a) undercutting the price point of Phone(1), this feels like the go-to device for the Nothing experience!
Phone(2a) provides the perfect platform for Nothing OS2.5 to shine with a battery that lasts over a day of moderate usage, a camera worthy of the “fresh eyes” campaign and a complete package that for the price bracket it’s in, pushes far further than expected.
Physical: With significant limitations to reviewing the physical nature of the device (since it was a prototype) the first thing I noticed was how light and thin the Phone(2a) is, this results in a device that is comfortable to hold and slides nicely into the pocket. The power/volume buttons feel less “Tactile” compared to Phone(1) with a feel more akin to using a plastic case than the device itself. Having seen the Phone(2a) unboxing, I suspect this is due to the plastic build of the device, considering that I’d typically use a plastic case, this feels familiar and I might even rock the Phone(2a) caseless.
Software: Nothing OS 2.5 offers a unique take on the Android platform, the design language comes through clearly in a full package of icons, widgets and functionalities. From sleek movement, tight integrations and easy use, I’ve not faced any issues with the software onboard.
Embracing the Nothing OS System, I set up a single-page homepage that has never been so useful, quick settings and handy widgets enable me to grab everything needed at a glance. Phone(2a) will provide a perfect point for new users to experience something new with the Nothing OS platform.
The Nothing Widgets are another highlight, setting up quick settings widgets on my home screen (or even my lock screen) means I don’t even have to unlock my phone to trigger my torch, get quick information or even control media.
While using the device, there have been frequent OTA updates addressing noted issues but also optimizing and improving on areas I hadn’t even considered, this will hopefully mean that from day 1 users should be in for a smooth experience!
Camera: As someone who doesn’t take that many photos, the camera has me taking more photos than ever. It’s no wonder the slogan “Fresh Eyes” has been used with this device. I’ve never found it this easy to capture what I want quickly and with confidence that my photo will be clear and vibrant.
Phone(2a) does not have a “Macro” mode as such but is still more than capable of capturing detailed up-close shots, Phone (2a) comes to life in capturing day-to-day moments, HDR content pops, details are sharp and quick shots perform better than expected. The camera is also one area that has received significant tuning during this process, with almost every OTA update improving the experience.
Battery: The highlighted efficiency of the MediaTek 7200 Pro comes through clearly in the battery life of the product. Moderate usage resulted in the battery lasting for a day and a half for me, pair this with a quick 20-minute plug-in and I’ve got a perfect flow with Phone(2a) and how it has kept its charge up with my own.
With how battery technology has resulted in such rapid charging, the lack of wireless charging on the device is something that I’ve not missed as much as I initially thought I might.
Audio/Sounds: The sound character of each Nothing Device is as much of a unique selling point as the Glyphs which they pair with this to bring the complete package. As for media consumption, I find that Phone(2a) is more than capable and I’d suspect about a third louder than the Phone(1). I also noticed how much clearer a sound was produced by the Phone(2a), and podcasts with 2 or more hosts sounded more distinct as opposed to emanating from a flat speaker.
Screen: Phone(2a) with the “standard” colour settings feels roughly ~20% brighter than Phone(1) with the colour contrast standing out when side-by-side with Phone(1) which looks muted by comparison. Phone(2a) also has a much more responsive adaptive brightness setting, typically I find this feature irritating and laggy, but with Phone(2a), it not only reacts quick enough but sets the brightness akin to what I would have selected naturally.
Summary: All in all, at this price point, Phone(2a) offers a definitive Nothing experience that can keep up with me and offers a clear upgrade over Phone(1). I look forward to seeing the community reaction to the Phone(2a) and can’t wait for people to get their hands on it!
