I would like to tell you about this French OS that I have just discovered. It was created in 2018, was until now in Beta version, and has just passed in V1. It focuses on privacy and control of personal data.
It’s an open source system based on Android, it’s fully “deGoogled” and it does not integrate the famous Google Mobile Services which has some advantages but also some disadvantages.
It does not have any trackers on board, unlike Android or iOS.
/e/OS is developed by a non-profit organisation.
If you want to test it, you have 3 options.
- Buy a Murena smartphone equipped with this OS.
- The /e/ Foundation is a partner of manufacturers such as Samsung or Fairphone, so it is possible to find a smartphone of these brands equipped with the OS.
- or you want to install it on your smartphone, here are some conditions: either by going through an installer - but few models are compatible - or by simply downloading the package. In spring 2022, the operating system is based on Android 11.
I mentioned the disadvantages:
It’s a somewhat austere design, some slowness and a lack of applications that you can use every day such as mobile payment services, Auto services (Autoplay or Carplay) as well as for multimedia playback (apparently)
