Introducing the Phone (2a), Scarlet Edition. The inspiration for its design struck me in an instant, and while the concept flowed seamlessly, crafting the camera capsule posed a creative challenge. Yet, it was the vibrant hue of red that truly captivated me, a spark ignited by Noting’s “Sound of Change” video. For those curious about the journey behind the product and its video, I invite you to explore the behind-the-scenes section for a closer look.
I also want to take a moment to reflect on my role as the community board observer. Holding this position does not dampen my enthusiasm as a participant. On the contrary, it reinforces my dedication. I remain, first and foremost, a member of this vibrant community, now with the added privilege and responsibility of representing our collective voices and passions.
Rationale: I didn’t want the red to overshadow the beauty of 2a. The red should be present, but it shouldn’t detract from the design’s aesthetic appeal. Only the back glass is tinted with red, allowing us to appreciate the internal beauty. This approach ensures that we can still admire the design while incorporating the red element. Additionally, the glyphs emit a red light, further enhancing the overall visual effect.
Instead of plastic, the frame and buttons have been upgraded to polished aluminum to enhance the device’s premium appearance. The use of polished aluminum not only imparts a stainless steel-like feel but also creates a striking interplay with light, adding to its visual appeal. Furthermore, the back camera capsule has been substituted with transparent plastic instead of opaque, creating the illusion of protruding cameras and lending a captivating futuristic aesthetic when viewed from various angles.
Assuming the community edition Phone (2a) will be highly limited in availability, to make it even more special, I wanted to offer a small choice during pre-ordering: you can opt for either black buttons or white buttons. This enhances the rarity and adds a fun touch to make it extra special.
Behind the Scenes: While I have ideas for hardware design, I face challenges in executing them due to my limited skills in design software. However, I ventured into using Blender for the first time to bring my concepts to life, leveraging the .glb file from the official product page. It took me two days to complete my submission. The demanding rendering process nearly overwhelmed my MacBook Air, yet I managed to produce videos with white and black backgrounds— the only colors I envisioned during ideation. The B-roll footage you see is AI-generated, paying tribute to the animals used in previous Nothing marketing campaigns, now infused with red. I believe creative direction and marketing are my forte, and I eagerly anticipate stage 4 to invest more time and effort. Despite knowing there will be superior and more creative entries, I embarked on stage 1 to give every stage a try. I look forward to viewing other entries, rooting for passionate hardware design enthusiasts to emerge victorious.
When it comes to marketing material, I’ve used a red owl. The Indian Eagle Owl was featured in the official marketing material for Phone 2a, but I opted for a different owl as mine is AI-generated. Additionally, let’s be honest, the back camera capsule does resemble an owl’s face, doesn’t it? I’ve infused a slightly magical touch to convey a hint of witchiness, inspired by Scarlet Witch, pun intended. I look forward to sharing more ideas in stage 4, as stage 1 is focused on hardware design.

[16th April] Inspirations:
It is time to disclose the true inspiration behind my selection of the color red. It may seem somewhat clichéd to attribute it to Pokémon once again, yet, as many within the community are aware, I am an ardent fan of Pokémon, with Charizard being my preferred Pokémon. Additionally, the “Sound of Change” video served as another significant source of inspiration, drawing from the essence of Nothing’s brand identity. It was my intention to duly acknowledge this source of inspiration. The choice of scarlet, in particular, was motivated by a desire to pay tribute to all generations of Pokémon game, with Scarlet and Violet being the most recent releases. Upon finalizing the color choice, I opted for a vivid red with a subtle orange tint, intending for the orange hues to become apparent when illuminated, thereby creating a connection with Nothing’s sub-brand, " CMF.
