I think it might not be a bad idea to upload my designs here as well while I’m nervous about getting the approval. I actually lost both of the deadlines, each one for some not interesting reasons. But this time just got it in time. Submitted a few hours ago. Whew… Wish me approval!

Thanks for your time and hope you like it!

@“Rob ⚡️” Hey Rob, what’s up! I noticed my submission for phase 3 was named “Unnamed”, even after I entered my name on nothing.tech

Hello! I’m Carlos and this is my submission for Phase 3: Packaging Design. It uses a technique called Lenticular Printing to give it a nice glow effect (the main perk of the phone’s hardware). This is my first time working on a product for Nothing. However, some of you might recognize me as the kid from the “Nothing Unfiltered” video, where I reached out to Carl for an interview, in which we talked about many interesting matters, such as the future of AI, open source solutions and more.

The way Lenticular Printing works is the following: two images are interlined and printed. Then, the lens is placed on top of them. This lens has small cavities that reflect the light in two directions. If you see the object from the left side, you will see one state of the image. In this case, phone (2a) without glow. But if you see it from the opposite side, voilà! A glow effect is achieved. In the beginning, I also considered using bioluminescent ink, and honestly, I still think it’d look super sick. However, after thinking long and hard, I realized the Lenticular method is much more efficient when it comes to showcasing the effect. Let me explain. Imagine you walk into a shop, and see phone (2a) in the shelf. Even if it’s nighttime, you probably won’t be able to see the glow effect, as most stores have indoor lightning. With Lenticular Printing, however, you would be able to see the effect at all times, which is very useful when you are trying to attract the customer.

The overall design is very minimalistic, staying true to Nothing’s design, making it recognizable when among other products, and expressing the company’s vision. The product’s name; “phone (2a) Community Edition” is abbreviated as “phone (2a) CE”. However, the big (2a) text stays the same, as I believe Nothing’s Community is one of the biggest strengths of the company, and therefore this product should not be segregated among the other proprietary products.

These are some of the things that inspired this project… 😉

I also made this short video showcasing the design, I hope you like it!

mei - congrats on getting a submission in on-time for this stage! 👏🏼

Fingers crossed it is all approved soon, because I love the ideas behind your design.

Utilising the wallpapers, and their shape into the box is a nice touch, then seeing your skills in AutoCAD come across to the replicating the “eyes”. As well as the reference to the LEGO 👀

The voting stage shall be tough, once again…best of luck to you all! 👏🏼

      • mei replied to this.

        🚨Stage: 3 submissions are now closed🚨
Some new entries may appear after this time, as they are approved by the team, however no new submissions can be made.
Check back on 24 June to show support for your favourite entry.

        • One vote per user

        • Votes cannot be changed

        • Choose carefully!

A reminder that the final decision lies with our internal jury, meaning the most-voted project may not necessarily win.

Rob ⚡️ changed the title to Community Edition - Stage 3 Submissions Now Closed .

It’s been amazing seeing all the submissions flooding in. Good luck to all those that took part 🤞

        Nice project, as always!
The best ideas always come just an hour after the deadline, am I right? My design focuses on Transparency, Anticipation and Tactile Sense and I have just found out that there is a bioplastic called cellulose acetate, it is biodegradable, transparent and probably tears easier than regular plastic.

Regardless, I am happy with what I came up with and it’s super interesting to see all of the different submissions in the gallery. We have at least 3 lenticular designs! : )

Feel free to support my proposal here, when it’s time to vote!

        EthanDowling 😍 Thanks Ethan!
edit: I was also thinking redesigning the back label with a transparent sticker to look like a phone home screen, with the infos in widgets style & more, but that was not in the brief and each market might have a different one…

Ealesy101 thank you for the kind words! i had to sacrifice presentation to get it in on time and now finally i saw my designs in the gallery!

I’m glad you noticed the details and liked my idea. indeed, the competition will be tough. good luck to you as well!

Wow, I just checked latest submissions and are really cool. Congratulations everybody, may the best win!

Rob ⚡️ it was really fun working on this project. Astrid and Kenta’s vision really pushed the boundaries. To my surprise Astrid and I actually went to the same design school and the relevance was quite visible in their design process

Genuine question. Why did so many people wait right till the very last day to submit ? I saw the submissions on Friday morning and it was like 17. Checking now it is 65.

I guess that’s because the last entries will be shown on top. Oh the psychology of recency bias.

With all that being said I went through the final list.

My top two favourites are Ian_H_Simmonds

          flo_rahil

Simple, efficient and attractive designs. Not trying to take away the attention from the actual product. Feasible and economical. What’s not to love ?

Of course my word is not law. I wish everyone who participated a best of luck. Just sharing my thoughts.

Edit : Just wanna this - the amount of designs that have been inspired by Rahil’s and @Roman1 is absurd. Like you can literally figure it out for yourself. So many ideas just imitated without actual thought process. Roman was the first to incorporate the wallpaper on the back and just count how many have done the same. Reminds me of the meme - “Copy my homework, just change it up a little bit”

stealth not necessarily latest submissions will show on top. I am working on an unofficial Nothing community app and I realized that the entry list will eventually shuffle during voting days, @Rob ⚡️ may confirm this.

I think that submission days are way too many, I would prefer 2 weeks to work on the submissions and 3 to 5 days to submit.

Mirko_ddd Oh that’s a good thing. I didn’t know they shuffle the entry during voting. I joined the community only recently due to the CMF phone 1 announcement. So this is like the first time I will be voting and having that experience of this community project.

I think the submission time was quite appropriate. I feel like people held their submissions in fear their ideas will be taken or implemented in some other way. I think that is pretty evident from the way some submissions have been inspired by the early ones.
