I am planning on buying the Nothing phone (2) soon but I found out that it only has 3 years of software updates and 4 years of security updates. And I was wondering if that means that it will stop at Android 16 for everyone or will it stop 3 years after I bought it. (for example from Android 14 to Android 17)
Also when I buy the phone will I find the software it was released with initially or the latest one?

Software support depend on the initial release date (July 2023) so last major android update should be Android 16.

As for initial firmware it depend on the production date of the unit but you should be able to update to latest easily through the setup process

Derren changed the title to Nothing Phone (2) - Software Update Policy .

The initial release software completely depends on the production date. I just purchased a brand new Phone (2) on Amazon Germany not even two weeks ago, the device was produced in December 2023 and I got an immediate update notification to 2.5.5 and after updating it also found the latest 2.5.6 right away.

If it’s worth or not depends on you own preferences. I just like the Phone (2) so much that I purchased it again after selling it earlier this year. Four years of security updates should be mid 2027, sure we’ll most likely be stuck with Android 16 by then, but at least for me that’s not too much of a big deal - especially since I can imagine to maybe upgrade to the Phone (3).

Of course if you are planning to keep the phone for four to six years, there are better options for long term software support out there.

circle674 you have much better devices at this price point. It’s useless to buy Phone 2 even after discount. I wish I had waited 7-8 months. Buy the Xiaomi 14 Civi which has a much better camera, processor, display, basically everything. Then if you wanna save some bucks and get a good phone, go for Moto Edge 50 Pro, a friend of mine has gotten it. Man it is really smooth, and cameras are much better than Phone 2 even with such a cheaper price tag. You get IP 68 too. Phone 2 is nowhere near these competitions.

I’ve got the phone 2, really like it, phone is still going strong. If I didn’t already have it I’d get the 2a plus they’ve just announced. That’s based on more software updates, it being a newer phone, and I like the metallic look.

I compared Nothing Phone 2, One Plus 12, and Pixel 9. Unfortunately, Nothing Phone offers only 3 years of software updates, which is not enough nowadays since other brands offer 4, 5, and even 7 years. For security reasons, I removed it from my wishlist when I discovered One Plus is Chinese. So, I should stick with Pixel 9, which has more than double the time for software updates compared to Nothing.

If Nothing improve their updates policy I might reconsider as my future phone.

BrunoSaldanha expecting updates from Google pixel is also like expecting rain in dessert. It’s better you try Samsung or iPhone for longer updates at right time.

BrunoSaldanha 3 years is enought for os updates and 4 years for security updates, after 3-4 years you battery are finished yours chipset are finished also and the os starts to slow down, and is better to swich the phone every 3-4 years becouse the new chipsets/camera chipsets and technology.

Who need a 6-7 years of updates for an old phone?! after 3-4 years the phone is finished.

vovan-v u can buy a smartphone brand new after 1-2 years of release but u dont will get new updates but phone actually not finished enough

Longer time of supported updates are a relatively new concept in the Tech Industry and I am sure once Nothing have scaled-up to the same level of the big brands, that they will also extend their Software/Security commitments.

For now it remains 3 Years of OS and 4 Years of Security updates (bi-monthly)/2 Years of OS and 3 Years for CMF Phone 1, until we hear otherwise, this is how it shall remain.

Yes, after three years, the smartphone will need to be changed. Buy a new one, even if updates last for 10 years ).

coff1n right but compare to new released phones you phone will be old, even if you buy a flagship compare to mid-ranger that will came 1-2 years later will get the same feautures for lowest price.

I almost went with the Motorola Edge 50 Neo as they now get 5 years of Android updates. The CMF1 gets only two years, but I’ll switch to custom ROM or some NOTHING OS hack by then perhaps.

NOTHING is quite poor in all price brackets with length of updates. Samsung A15 gets 5 years of patches and 4 years of updates as an examples.

However, NOTHING is more interesting and a CheapMoFO (CMF) so I know who I’m getting into bed with.
