Into Glow

Inspiration / Moodboard

Our concept combines sleek, materials with neon-green accents and intricate circuitry patterns. Inspired by the mesmerizing glow of bioluminescent jellyfish and the sophisticated allure of digital matrices, our design aims to fit with the inspiration of previous stage winners, but also live within the current NOTHING packaging family

Details

We wanted the packaging to feel consistent with the rest of the products but at the same time to stand out, giving a special (product) experience to the user. Exploring the enigmatic nature of light as a ‘material’ to influence or affect the perception of the users, designing only the packaging but also the experience around it. Considering what it feels like to open and touch the box of this special edition.Involving more than one sense, a packaging that you cannot only see but feel and touch, also in the dark, yet moving away from the obvious execution of glow in the dark.

Process

Designed between London and Milan, the creative process consisted of lots of inspiration, discussion and experiments. We started with some initial ideas and a big moodboard that took shape and became concepts. Some were discarded, while others were refined and iterated several times to reach the final result. Once we decided on the final result, we created our textures by taking elements of lighting in the dark and merging them with Nothing’s dot matrix language.

Finishes and Manufacturing

We made sure that our design is manufacturable with appropriate materials and finishing methods.

Beautiful . If the phone was totally green, this would make more sense.

Also, mods should have merged this threat to the stage 3 discussion thread.

While I love the aesthetic and details of this design, this is simply a disaster waiting to happen. The actual Kenta and Astrid product looks nothing like this, an angry customer might sue for false advertisement.

Also what’s up with the views on this post I literally scrolled past this and it was like 350 suddenly it at 600 ? Odd.

stealth the box shows the distinctive design of the phone, must not be a real picture of it (the phone itself will not be 100% the same as the render submitted in stage 1, they will try to be as close as possible, but I would not be surprised if the phone itself would come out in a much clearer or darker color than the one showed in the concept, the important thing is that glows, this was in fact the winning idea). No one knows how the real phone will come out, what we know is the distinctive design, and I don’t think anyone could sue nothing for this box.

Mirko_ddd You cannot look at this box and tell me it’s for the community edition. It looks nothing like it. It would be appropriate for a Dark Green version of the phone NOT the community edition. Also no one knows what the final version of the phone looks like… so they should just make whatever they like ? No they will take reference from what was selected as the stage 1 winner. This box looks nothing like that.

Also @AndreaFanelli - you might wanna stop whatever bot you are using to artificially inflate the views on this post. It has more views now than the actual community edition thread (and that too only in 1 day) Everytime I refresh the view count goes up by 20. The lack of engagement on this post clearly communicates that some malpractice has taken place. Kindly don’t do these type of things.

Edit - After my uploading this post. The view count went up by 500 in 4 minutes. That doesn’t even happen for official Nothing announcements @Rob ⚡️ you have to look into this. There is clearly a bot being used to increase views on this post.

stealth you’re missing the stage 4 purpose tho 😊. Maybe you don’t know, but @AndreaFanelli is an active member of this community and a recognized designer that has previous collabs with nothing (he is one of the CMF watchface contest) and he is also very followed in social medias, so no bot is involved in his view count. I respect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree this time with you.

Mirko_ddd Stage 4 purpose ? Stage 4 can also be executed with the normal representation of the stage 1 hardware. Even you know that the box doesn’t match the product. You are simply supporting your fellow countrymen. (Which I respect, but please be fair) If the special edition of the phone 2a had Green instead of yellow on the box would that be acceptable ? Or if the black version of 2a appeared to be grey like phone 2 ? I don’t think so. Representing the product properly is important.

Regarding the view issue. Idk, I don’t think a fellow community member has more pull than the official Nothing announcements. I may be wrong on that second part. I don’t use instagram or twitter so I cannot verify his social clout. Just the lack of overall engagement with this post and the giant quick leaps in views is concerning.

stealth so, if you look at the submissions and there is not a picture of the exact image of the stage 1 winner concept for you is not a correct entry, and is also risk to be sued (which I disagree). I respect your opinion, and the fact that you may not like it, but that’s it, I would not say that I am not fair defending this submission because I also showed appreciation for other entries such as the concept from Miguel (that has a black box with the phone design with black lucid ink) or the one with the phone design made of tubes and a glass plate with micro organisms. I love the “not obvious” part of the contest, I would be disappointed if the winner will be a simple representation of the stage 1 phone as it is.

              1. I believe this doesn’t deserve a separate thread. This should have been merged into the stage 3 main thread.

              2. @Mirko_ddd you are missing out on one simple logic, this design completely misses the whole point of stage 3 design. There is no green phone 2a, i don’t even think it was in the stage 1 entries. This is entirely a new concept from scratch, while it is very good, it is of not much use. I appreciate the duo’s efforts though. Like I mentioned in my first reply, this can only make sense if there was a green phone 2a.

              3. I did notice @AndreaFanelli ’s X account and it does not have much engagement going on. The major traffic is coming from a post done by the this page called “The Nothing & CMF Fan Hub” on X, which has 4k followers and the post has 17k reach. The post has link to this thread in the caption, so most people are just clicking on it and reaching this thread. (Which is also cool that more people are getting a look at this awesome community.)

                Fractal

It is encouraged to open a thread and discuss on a single submission, there is no need to merge it on the one that is a general thread for stage 3 submission.

I don’t think that this submission does not meet the brief, otherwise would have not been accepted. Opinions are opinions and are well accepted, but I don’t understand this negativity around this submission 😅 .

                  Mirko_ddd

No negativity here, at least not from me. Anyone looking at the visuals will agree that is is indeed a notch above the average and it is aesthetically pleasing.

There are many other “accepted” submissions with visual identity that is completely unrelated to stage 1 design. My comment was about how better it would have been if they chose to focus on the visual direction that aligns with the stage 1 winner Phosphorescence concept. Especially considering the designers capabilities with past work.
