Just got the cmf phone 1 with the intention of using / reviewing it on a trip to Thailand only to read ‘India sim only’ on the box (I’m in India fyi).

2 qs:

  1. Is an indian sim required for all operation or just (as I read elsewhere) for setup? So can i stick any local Indian sim in and turn it on then later put in a different (eg thai) sim and it will still work?

  2. What does it need from the Indian sim? ie does it need to be my Indian sim (which I don’t have cuz i use esim) or can i just use a friend’s for a minute?

Any help appreciated before i open the box 🙏

  • As with both Nothing Phone (2) and (2a) I would imagine the process is the same.

    Initially you have to set up the device in India with a local, non roaming SIM. After that you’ll be able to use the device as normal in other regions.

    Please note that if you factory reset the device, you’ll need to reset the process.

UPDATE: Inserted a friend’s SIM when it asked at startup and it let me in 🙂 I guess it just checks in with the local network and then you’re off to the races. Worked ok on my uk lebara SIM after that. And now with no SIM at all it’s working on wifi. Thanks again!

I bought CMF phone from Indian online and then brought it to Oman but I can’t use it, it shows that I have to insert Indian SIM and use it

in oman i try india sim also

    You will need to either take it back to India and set it up with an India SIM (local non-roaming) or reach out to the support team.

        mobinbiju-7 - You can login to the Nothing Support(https://nothing.tech/pages/contact-support) and raise a issue providing all the details, they will ask you for IMEI number to unlock the network. Once you provide they will reply back after unlocking. I have done this while in UK. (Sep 2024) SCINDIA

          Derren Hello Darren. I have the same problem. I’m a foreign student in India. I’ve bought it for my sibling as a gift and wanted her to do the unboxing herself. After unboxing and turning it on we faced the exact problem. I’ve submitted the ticket as instructed. Wanted to share my experience. Will update this post later for the result.

                AmaanPasha Yes you can. Just be careful not to factory reset though.
                I’m still stuck and waiting for the support response. I’ve bought roaming package (which was quite expensive) for my Indian sim card but to no avail. I wish it was more transparent.
