Because in many cases it’s wasteful. People moronically replacing perfectly good phones with ‘upgrades’ that provide them no RL benefit encourages manufacturers to unnecessarily produce more and more units in larger numbers. That means more rubbish in landfill and the ocean, and more damage to the environment.
If more people held onto their phones for two or more years we’d all be better off.

To clarify, by replacing the numbering convention, each season Nothing could upgrade and downgrade components (or not at all) and the CMFs however they see fit. Each phone would be it’s own standalone device.
