Preventing AMOLED burn-in

I noticed that the Always On Display(AOD) of the Nothing phone is static, compared to other manufacturers’ AOD which keeps moving/changing position, to prevent AMOLED burn-in. I hope the devs can provide an update regarding this. And speaking of burn-in, other Nothing Phone 1 users are already experiencing burn-in on the notification bar at the top, because of the static information (time, batt percent..) hopefully the Nothing team can also address this.

Yeah, that might be a problem after some time. I had this issue in Galaxy S9+ but not coming from AOD: I had three bars always visible and they where the status bar, a smaller bar below it that I wasn’t able to identify and the navigation bar. The AOD in Galaxy S9+ was quite clever. It was not a truly ALWAYS ON display because it appeared under given conditions: taking off the phone from a pocket, flipping it face up or hovering a hand on screen while sitting face up. The last was very useful, IMHO. I think it used the proximity sensor to get that result, so Nothing developers could quite emulate that in an easy way (movement sensor reporting horizontal standing, screen is off, something approaches to the proximity sensor, then light up the AOD).

After the 2.0.3 update I’ve noticed the info and clock on the AOD actually work their way down the screen throughout the day till there’s a good inch and a half difference between it and the lock screen then work their way back up till they match up again.

Is that something changed to prevent burn in? It’s very annoying anyways.

Pixel phones have the exact same thing and they don’t move and have never caused burn in.

Louis ☕️ Don’t really need a screenshot.

The Date/weather info and the double line clock on the always on display work their way down the screen throughout the day and night.

Go down till the double line clock is just lower than the middle of the screen then start working it’s way back up over the hours till they’re in line with the lock screen then start going back down again, continueous cycle.

Restarting the phone doesn’t make a difference either, the info and clock on AOD just display the same place when it was shut off and continue the cycle.

Louis ☕️ So, I managed to record the difference in position of AOD widgets and AOD clock with Quick Look on using a different phone – here you go. The first one is from today’s morning and the second one was take 15min ago.

Please, keep these videos in discresion as there is a photo of my family (and at the same time I consider it as a little treat for all of you, so hopefully it lightens up your day😅).

Milhouse Ok this is great, really explains a lot. I actually happened to have the same issue you’re displaying here. One moment it was displaying the behaviour from the first video, and now I look at my phone and it’s giving me the same behaviour as your second video (the way it should be).

Did you guys notice that the AOD blinks 5 seconds after it comes active and blinks again right before the lock screen shows up?

To be exact: The AOD blinks when the fingerprint scanner disappears. But it is not related to the scanner. I tried disabling it to check.

It’s essential to address the always-on display on the latest OnePlus phones. The static positioning of the clock could potentially lead to screen burn-in issues over time. This concern should be taken into consideration for a better user experience.

KinoRongavilla That I undestand, but it is strange that for some it works like this and for others it doesn’t. Some users have AOD widgets and clock positioned always at the same place on their screen - matching the position on Lock screen. At the same time, when NOS 2.0 was introduced, there was quite a focus on the system’s consistency including smooth transitions between AOD, Lock screen and Home scree, which in this case is not followed.

Milhouse What I’ve noticed is that the aod moves on its own to prevent burn in only when it was in its original position for long. This is on my nothing phone 2.

As for the NOS 2.0 keynote, they mentioned that it’s smooth now. In the videos, you can clearly see that the clock and widgets are coming down from their lock screen position to their aod position. That seems to be by design.
