This topic has always been an interesting one, its something that has been asked many times in the past and will be asked well into the future.

What makes this topic even more intresting is that if you were to ask this question every ten years, peoples outlook would be totally different each time. With tech ever growing, expanding and most importantly becoming more and more accessible, it can be very hard to predict what might happen.

It makes me think about all these sci-fi films we’ve had over the years that have “predicted” or tried to imagine what the future might look like and most of the time theyre not quite right! I still dont have my Back to the Future hoverboard.

So my question is what do you think tech will look like 10 years from now? if that questions seems very broad, here are a few examples.

  • Phones/tablets/watches etc
  • Transport
  • Healthcare
  • AI/VR/AR
  • Space exploration

I think it’s become quite difficult to daydream about the future of consumer tech specifically… which is my favourite tech category. I think we are becoming more aware as a society that we are too easily sucked into mindless browsing of digital content, so I hope and expect to see more innovation in this space which allows us to stay connected without all the doom-scolling and becoming victims of social media algorithms.

Space exploration is one thing that I’m curious about and love to read up on, and it seems that Elon is keen to put on the show for us. He also seems to have some strong opinons on robo-taxis which seem all the more plausible with every passing day.

AI of course could be an entire thread of its own…developments are so fast in this area…hopefully there will be come jobs left (insert :akisregret: emoji)

Nice topic and definitely got my mind going to lots of places. It’s interesting to look back at 10 years ago and to see the various technological advances that are now real things, albeit the execution might not be exactly the same but the concept is still there.

I do see AI becoming more of a norm in the future, we’re still at the very early days of this technology. Companies have used AI for a long time actually, just not in the more mass market/user friendly way that we now have with things like ChatGPT and MidJourney. I’m not sure entirely that it will replace humans, as you still require human input at the start, but it could cut down work forces and job positions.

Really difficult to think about where consumer tech will be in 10 years, but definitely nice to think about. I thin the integration of AI into our devices will push thing along more, besides just what AI is doing for camera software. Tablets seems to be catching up with the capabilities of laptops, and I think the easiest thing to really see here is that tablets might some day take over the use case for a laptop, once they figure out how to get processors smaller, batteries smaller and storage small enough that you can have a powerful enough tablet.

Space exploration seems to be growing and like Rob said above, I’m really curious about it too. I love watching all the live rocket launches and human flights into space. I think with more companies investing in this, our learnings will only increase.

Transport wise, for London specifically, I think we will see upgrades to the tube and getting better mobile phone service across the lines - something that is quite common throughout the rest of Europe.

I love this topic, it’s exciting to think about where we might be headed and the challenges we might face.

I believe that phones 10 years away may still exist in a similar form-factor/use case that we have now. While I think there will be developments and iterations, I can’t see them changing much beyond the place they occupy in our lives now. That said, I could see them becoming more of a central brain to the rest of the devices we use, with Watches/Earbuds/Wearables taking up specific functions.

Rob’s point is something I share the fear of, as people utilize their devices more, it feels as though online echo chambers are capturing more and more people. However, I do think there are signs of people becoming more aware of how unhealthy this can be, pair this with the recent turmoil Twitter/X has been going through and maybe we will see a reevaluation of how social media is used and driven.

Transport is an interesting one, our relationship with cars feels like it might be on the precipice of changing. Electric vehicles, “renting” cars and taxi services lead me to think that the “as a service” model may well find its way into vehicle ownership. I know that my

Space exploration is something I’m really excited about, my physics background is loving the amount of developments that have been occurring and as we see private companies stepping into this space, a new space race could be brewing!

Regardless of all of the above, I believe the biggest change we will have to see is our approach to energy generation. Utilizing more renewable energies along with using nuclear as a bridge will present many challenges on how storage and usage is balanced/maintained.

Recently, I’ve had some validation of a fear I thought was unwarranted, but on the latest WAN Show Luke raised this point. With more energy generation/utilization, I can see light pollution becoming more evident. I completed a summer project around this topic and was surprised at how large a problem this is, but how little it is spoken about. In 10 years’ time, I hope that along with other forms of pollution, light pollution will be more widely known about and considered before we continue to lose sight of the night sky.
