  • CBO Interviews: Mladen M. Hoyss on Shaping the Future of Nothing OS

It’s interesting to see how much common ground there was between Nothing and Blloc from the very beginning. You can tell what he brought to the OS

I didn’t know he had a background like me in industrial design. That definitely helps to get a different perspective on a creative level

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and look forward to the evolution of Nothing OS. I hope Nothing integrates their native apps with Google’s stock services rather than adding redundant ones, optimizing existing software to enhance user experience and keep devices bloat-free. For example, since Google Photos is excellent, another gallery app may not add value. Supporting new apps long-term is challenging, especially while maintaining the OS and launching new products. I hope Nothing OS maintains its unique identity and doesn’t become another generic UI that drives users away. The synergy of hardware and software is crucial for performance and efficiency, and straying from this repeats the mistakes of other manufacturers. I trust Nothing will be mindful of this synergy across their teams and again, looking forward to the evolution.

Wow I had no idea that some members of the team behind Ratio migrated to Nothing and helped developed the NOS.

I used to use Ratio extensively back on my older phone due to it’s minimal and mindful aesthetic and now the same principles have been incorporated into Nothing’s design language.

It’s crazy how small the world is sometimes.

Wow. I didn’t know blloc and nothing are connected. Great interview!

I remember giving ratio/blloc launcher a try a couple of years ago. It didn’t stick: I guess I was just too lazy to actually do the initial customisation to tailor the UI and UX to my preferences. I am not a Social Media user (at least not on my mobile device) so it did not make that much of a sense from a “digital-detox” perspective. But I liked the new approach to using an android smartphone. And I also remember there was a ton of trackers and permissions that you had to agree with - but I guess that is needed in order to have all the functionalities.

Right now I am waiting for my first Nothing Phone to arrive and I cannot wait to start using it!

A lovely interview, and a great write up. Thank you, Rohit!

This was great to hear Mladen’s thoughts on his previous experience at Blloc and how he has brought this to Nothing OS.

I am eager to see the design evolve across Nothing OS versions and to see how the Community can help play a part in inspiring changes across the OS.

A very good read over my morning coffee ☕️ Thanks for taking the time Rohit to bring us Mladen’s thoughts and insight. Very much looking forward to seeing the design evolutions that are coming up!

Thanks for the interview, it was interesting to read.

I really hope that the developers will not continue to shorten the Ndot font in the system, it is the corporate style of Nothing. In the end, if a more readable font is needed, why not order its development so that it harmonizes with Ndot and reflects the essence of an advanced technology company. Ntype gives off an archaic feel.

The Blloc Phone package looks amazing, clean, cosmic, advanced. Why doesn’t Nothing break the Apple trend and include a case, protective glass, not to mention a power supply unit? All this has to be bought from third-party manufacturers of dubious quality.

RohitPakalapati I literally went back to the ratio launcher last week as a throwback and to be honest, it just felt right to see ratio alive again on a nothing device (2a).

When I read that Mladen also co-founded blloc, everything just fell into place and to know that a few members from the blloc team are working on Nothing OS, it’s just reassuring personally.

Thank you for bringing an amazing software experience. Loving the 3.0 beta version!

Very interesting interview, I like the design & aesthetics of Nothing but I’m also a fan of Ratio.

I’m still using this launcher and I (and a lot of others) hope that there is at least someone left to work on this project or to open source it when no-one is working on it.

There are people out there that want to continue this project, but just don’t have the opportunity to do it.

We are all hoping to get at least some information about what is the future of Ratio, on the Ratio Discord server…
