A smartphone with high specs except for the camera

I never take photos with my smartphone.

When I use it occasionally, I use it as a memo or when I meet a male friend I haven’t seen in a while (if it’s a female friend, my girlfriend takes the photos) and we take photos together.

Even if I go to a place with a beautiful view, if there is a girl in the group, she takes photos and sends them to me (I don’t really need them, to be honest…).

I’m not interested in beautiful photos of scenery in the first place, and if I search for the place on the Internet, there are plenty of photos taken by professional photographers.

However, in recent years, the quality and functions of the camera on smartphones have improved and they have become more expensive.

I prefer high specs other than the camera on my smartphone. From what I know, if you lower the camera specs, it will become a mid-range smartphone with lower specs in other areas as well.

Therefore, in the future, I strongly hope that the manufacturer’s top model, the current NOTHING’s Flagship model like the Phone(2), will allow you to choose between high spec and low spec camera specs only.

It seems ridiculous that prices rise for something that you don’t need at all.

If I ever plan on having lunch with Cristiano Ronaldo or going on a space trip, I’ll buy myself a top-of-the-line camera, so no worries.

I am Japanese and most of my male friends agree with me.

By the way, my ideal phone right now would have a phone(2a) or Phone(2) exterior, a Galaxy S24 Ultra or Oneplus12 inside, a camera that’s more than 10 years old, and of course the OS, NothingOS.

Perhaps it’s a regional or time-of-life thing. I’m a man in the UK and very much want a good camera to take non-blurry, detailed photos of my children, pets, events and whatever else I choose to take photos of. Zoomed photos not so bothered about.

I expect most people I know would want at least a main camera on the back and a selfie camera, and that people who by a top of the range phone would expect similar performance in their camera.

I’m not interested in the number of cameras, just the quality of the photos it takes. If software closes the gap and there is little-to-no notable differences between lens, I’m ok with a cheaper lens.

Hi @Yoku, Interesting way of using the camera, have to admit It’s a first for me to hear that someone will want a high spec phone with a 10yo camera.
I also believe it might be related to culture, I’m Romanian and all my friends want a perfect camera on the phone because they do not want to spend more money on another device to take pictures, especially if you have kids like @sean (1) was saying, but I use my phone for work and private life and I love taking photos of random things not just for memos (that def is the easiest way to remember something 😂).

All in all I think the majority of the ppl (that I know) will think that high-spec phones should always have top of the line cameras

Yoku actually the cost of the cameras on a smartphone isn’t that big for OEMs. You would be surprised to know how much the sensors/lenses cost. Unfortunately big companies like Samsung, Apple, Google and others use the cameras to their own advantage because nowadays most people are obsessed with social media and showing off their pics/videos. This makes it easier for manufacturers to charge top money for their devices just because of an extra sensor, like a telephoto (zoom) for example.

I find your opinion quite interesting. It would be nice if the concept of modular smartphones had any success.

If there was a base model that we could buy and be able to add a better processor/storage, extra cameras, bigger batteries and eventually a better screen, it would be great. As users we could get a personalised phone with the specs we really need. On the other hand I understand that this convenience would be expensive, specially in the early stages. Having a smartphone assembled with a process similar to a personal computer would require much R&D, engineering, creating new standards, lots of testing and certification processes, etc.

In the end, I guess that this level of hardware customisation wouldn’t save the customers much money…

First I want to say, even if it’s hard to believe, that I’m happy that I can interact with you on subjects like this. Interesting idea. Tbh, the images that some of dumbphones produce today have a cool edge to them, similar to film photograph which I kinda dig. I think cameras are such a large sell for a smartphone today that I don’t see this happening but, it’d be cool if it did.

What I do think Nothing are continually communicating through their design choices is that the camera can be good in a phone but doesn’t need to be overly complicated, no need for four lenses, etc.

vovan-v that would be a great idea! I really like the way that Google differentiates their phone models. I’d prefer a smaller model to be available from Nothing. I mean, the Nothing Phone 2a is nice but I’d love it to have a 6.1 or 6.2 inch screen max.
