Finally, it’s here! But it seems like a half-baked update. Most of the major Android 15 features are missing — even themed app icons are also missing.
Circle to Search seems to be available in the OS, but has been gatekept by the Settings app. Don’t know why they did this. The Settings app already has the code for enabling/disabling CTS, but it just won’t show up in the Gesture Navigation settings. I even found strings in the Settings app that say that the Hide Navigation bar feature needs to be turned off in order to enable CTS.
Even Private Space seems to be available in the OS, but just like CTS, has been gatekept. The Settings app has Activities to enable/disable Private Space, but they can’t be accessed.
I’m not too sure about the App Archiving feature, i.e., if it is available in the OS or not (it should be ideally), but the Settings app has some strings related to archiving.
Satellite Connectivity also seems to be available on the OS side. The Settings app also has some Activities related to it. But I don’t know if it works or not as I don’t think my carrier supports it. On Pixel devices, it works with T-Mobile in the US, so if someone uses it then could they please share if it works or not?
- Other things like Themed App Icons, 16KB page size (available when searching), default Android equalizer (not sure if it has been removed by Google as well) are missing.
- The “Powered by Android” badge on the boot up screen is still the old one whereas some of the other Nothing phones use the new badge with a capital “A” as per Google’s terms.
- Changing the order of the ring, vibrate and silent buttons was unnecessary.
- A new option called “Scanning for deceptive apps” is there but it turns off as soon as you go back.
Otherwise the OS is working smoothly without any hiccups. The new animations are nice as well and the lock screen clocks are great too! The new quick settings menu is also working pretty smooth. The Landroid screen saver also looks cool (thanks for keeping it).
Also, it would be nice if someone from the team could clarify why these features are missing from Nothing OS 3 and if they will eventually be available or not.
Note: Some of things mentioned above may just be code left behind by the Nothing team and which in reality would not be running at all.
