SDKs / APIs for Glyphs

Hi community,

as far as I see there is currently no official documentation how to program apps, so you can benefit from the glyphs.

So I try it now here: is there somewhere an developer guide or an API spec on how to use the glyph interface as a programmer?

There are already some in official documentation /reverse engineering. But they mentioning that you need to get an access code / token so you can unlock your app to use the APIs.

But currently no body knows where to get those keys.

paul-jeschke in my knowledge it is the only dev that tried to reverse engineer the glyph API, the team already said they won’t release their API. and it’s nderstandable as it’s their main marketing point for the phone

And that exactly the point why they should release it. Currently you can basically use it for 4 things:

Notification
Camera light
Torch
And Uber arrival 🤷‍♀️

There are so much more options if the API would be known. For example why not do the same you can do with Uber for the rest of the public transportation. Or like for Food delivery services.

Currently the glyph thing is more or less a party trick but nothing useful. With opening the API it could be integrated in so much more Apps so it will become useful.

P. S.: Only the hardware is unique and relevant for marketing. To make it accessible for all developers would just increase the marketing of these extra lights.

paul-jeschke I kinda agree with you for the most part. But in any case, you are a developper, would you bother write a piece of code to just for 1 phone ? most of the time the answer will be no, and I think that’s why they didn’t opened the API yet.

We’ll see in the future how things are evolving

@Remi F yes I understand your point. But still it’s for nothing just the following:

Remove the protection in front of the already existing APIs
Maybe give us a bit of documentation

And then the internet can do it’s thing and do what ever it wants todo with it. And if at least a single person is using it, it was worth it.

I agree with you that most apps won’t support it. But that’s with all new things the same.

It’s just sad, that people buy this phone for the lights and basically there are two apps that can use it.

@johnmadsen I guess your comment is off topic. Yes you can turn of glyphs completely if you want. But that is not what this topic is about. If you have problems with your glyphs maybe open a new thread, to keeps this clean. This thread should be for developers and engineers from Nothing.

Recently got the Nothing Phone 2 and it’s just sad to see that I as a developer cannot go beyond the basics of this Glyph’s interface and use my own skills to develop more features for this.
Having lights sync to music is just one part of the whole thing, People will buy this phone instead of an iPhone basically for the sake of the freedom and to customize and do whatever they want.
Till the API or documentation gets release,
1. The composer app should have loops and other functionalities
2. The music visualization should have at least modes or some settings for each user’s preference,
(After the latest updates all lights seem to just light up randomly, I’d prefer the middle section to be kept only for bass)

A company doing such a bold and innovative thing in this market of overly saturated boring phones is a great thing, but you gotta do it right.

Really happy this has been officially announced and previewed - exciting to think of all the new utility potentially coming to Nothing phones!
