Hi there! A couple of thoughts regarding each phone:
Nothing Phone (2):
- Keep in mind Android 16 will be the last major Android update for this device. Security updates will be provided until summer 2027. If this is going to be your primary phone for the next three years, you’d be looking at a lack of updates.
- It still is the most powerful Nothing smartphone right now due to Snapdragon 8+ Gen1.
- It’s still the only recent model featuring wireless charging, so if that’s a must-have for you, your choices are limited.
- It also still has the best build quality (doesn’t matter if you are using a case) and the most advanced glyph layout.
- The zoom performance of the camera is pretty poor, while 2x is still very decent, 3x still being okay, the quality starts falling apart fairly quickly going higher - due to the lack of an actual telephoto camera
- IMHO the vibration motor is among the worst units I’ve ever had in any phone and I had quite a lot of phones in the last ~25 years.
Nothing Phone (3a) Pro:
- Will have the longest software support of any of the current Nothing smartphones, it’ll get major OS updates up to Android 18 and security updates until spring 2031.
- Only Nothing Phone featuring eSIM support as of now.
- Has a massive bump in terms of zoom quality over the existing line-up due to the dedicated periscope camera.
- The ultrawide camera seems to have received a downgrade with having just an 8 MP sensor, although megapixels for sure aren’t everything in photography terms, it still seems to be somewhat worse than previous ultrwide cameras.
- While it has a realy glass back this time, the frame is still plastic so you won’t get that premium feel, which again doesn’t really matter if you are using a case anyways.
- The Essential Space might be useful for you
- It has the best battery life to date, partly thanks to the efficient Snapdragon 7s Gen3.
- Storage speed is only rated at UFS 2.2 instead of UFS 3.1 - which is considered to be rather outdated in 2025.
- It has the brightest screen on paper of all Nothing phones, some reviewers claim or even meassured it is brighter than Phone (2).
Nothing Phone (3):
- Public doesn’t know anything about it yet, besides it exists.
- No clear release date known, speculation tends to be this summer, maybe July.
- It’s most likely going to be much more expensive than (3a) Pro, considering the MSRP of Phone (2) started at €599 at release, one can speculate it’ll most likely be the baseline for Phone (3) MSRP, if not even more expensive.
- It most likely won’t compromise on any features and pack the most complete feature set (telephoto camera, fast SoC, wireless charging, eSIM, build quality, glyphs and so on).
Bottom line: If you’re in a hurry and need a new phone now, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro in my opinion provides the most well rounded feature set of all currently available Nothing devices. While the NP2 is still the current flagship, it has just one major Android update left and with just more than two years of security updates coming for it, it’s more of a short term choice. If you really need wireless charging as a must-have, NP2 is your only option. If you care about good camera zoom quality, NP2 stands no chance compared to (3a) Pro.
If you could wait a few months longer and especially are willing spending more money than (3a) Pro’s MSRP, waiting for Phone (3) might be a good choice if you are looking for a complete flagship experience.
