I’m new to the Nothing family after my girlfriend bought me a pair of Ear(a)'s for the holidays – they’ve been my favorite gift anyone has gotten me. As someone with Autism, the noise-cancelling features as well as great audio quality for an affordable price have been a lifesaver in preventing sensory overload.
I’m excited to try a Nothing phone as my current phone is on its last legs (my girlfriend was horrified at the state of my cracked screen that has gotten me a glass shard in my finger on at least one occasion). Being a starving artist, I’m just excited at the idea of a phone that works at a budget price, but I’m definitely very interested at the specs of the camera too since I’d love to pick up photography again but it’s not always convenient to carry a whole camera around.
I would like to say the only thing that makes me nervous about phones nowadays are all the elements of AI–as an artist and writer who did an extensive college thesis on the ethics of AI, I wish Nothing would boast less about their genAI integrations if they’re so focused on staying green and sustainable. I’ve vetted through tons of sources and there’s nothing green or sustainable about commercially available generative AI models with the amount of energy used and labor exploited, not to mention the fact that they’re all built off the backs of artists and writers and pretty much anyone online without credit, compensation, or consent. I’m hoping Nothing keeps it basic with their promises of bloatware-free OS and continues down the path of sustainability and a low carbon footprint. I’d love to try it for myself to see how well it holds up and how simple and secure I can keep my phone in a world where tech is dominating every part of our lives.
