With the introduction of Essential Space and the Essential Key, Nothing has taken a unique step in enhancing user experience. However, recent reports suggest that Nothing might introduce a subscription fee for Essential Space in the future.

A similar approach was seen with Galaxy AI, which was free at launch but later confirmed to become a paid service.

This raises some key questions for the community:

Would you be willing to pay a nominal fee for AI-powered features in Essential Space?

If so, what price point would seem fair?

Should Nothing adopt a freemium model, where basic features remain free while premium ones are behind a paywall?

Let’s discuss! Would a paid Essential Space be a dealbreaker, or do you see value in it?

(Post written with some help of AI)

Yeah, I saw this looking at the code (120 USD) and AI tokens.

I’m OK with NOTHING subsidizing their phone price this way but make the 3a series less expensive then. I assume the 3 will be mid-500 GBP which is crazy tbh.

I’d pay just to fully disable the button

I don’t use it but keep pressing it randomly and it seems to react to static electricity too

if they decide to charge. I will quickly ditch this phone if there is not a way to customize that button for people who do not want to use this feature. Not just a disable option. Having a dead button on your phone is not cool unless you want it that way.

If it remains free no issues here.

I actually use essential space and like it, but it Is not good enough to charge money yet. Plus there will need to be a Road map of premium features like multi-platform access.. ability to link reminders to default calendar and task apps, etc.

Not just things like flip to record, and camera screen grab.

I think essential space so far is pretty cool and would be willing to pay, but it needs to be beefed up quite a bit

I believe this paid version will be for the new features and not for the complete Essential Space

I believe this would be wrong. Many consider this button an unnecessary feature (though I don’t think so), and if you have to pay to use it…

jimjam-nyc it can be customised currently with third-party apps, but I’ve been to lazy to emulate this and run it on my CMF1.

Question is: does a subscription pay more vs more phones sold because of this killer feature.

I’m waiting for my 3aPro (switching from Apple - since 2009) and very much look forward to this feature as I tend to use my phone as my Zibaldone.

Omg is this for real, I bought the phone 3a for the main reason it having. Essential space. If it’s going to be paid I’m going to return it. Carl Pei even said in a interview the notes are processed on device en some thing gets sent to the cloud for processing and than it deletes the message immediately.

i saw this a while ago, and here are my thoughts , this is bad i don’t a legit upside for this , unlike Samsung and google , nothing has added a physical button to make you subconsciously use it , thus indirectly make you use it more often, i m pretty sure the essential space usage would drop if it was an software feature rather then a physical button, plus the price they are charging is outrageous the essential space only uses ai to carry out instructions based on your voice notes just like google assistant every else is done locally so why will someone pay a hefty price for it? one might argue that its the software experience , but can someone tell me isnt it scummy to lock a feature of a device after you purchased it , which they didn’t disclose earlier , i know this premium will drop as soon as samsung drop its paid ai features , really anti consumer move by nothing

Exactly, I feel mislead. I bought it especially for the essential space. I’m happy I’m in the 14 day return period. I would be so angry if tey monetized it after the return period. You can’t do that. And I will boycot them when they do this. It’s so scummy. I hope Carl Pei sees this and agree with it.

Ehrmergerd I’m OK with this when the phone is less expensive. I find the hardware being offered is quite low at the PP of the 3a/pro. £449 is quite pricey.

      According to this https://www.androidauthority.com/nothing-essential-space-subscription-3538293/

There is a possibility to be charged for the use of ai in the future.

I wanted to ask it here since I know I will get the right answer.

True? False? This will have huge implications as I am holding on to my 2(a) plus CE at the moment and was looking forward to upgrade.

I want to make it clear that this is not an attempt at attacking the brand, fans or anything else.

I am just looking for answers.

      Thank you.

Merged 1 post from Paying for ai in the future? .

I feel Like it’s actually going to be fine if it will be a subscription as long as you’re still able to use the basic functions of Essential Space. But neverteless being able to remap the Essential Key will be necessary for all the people who don’t care about AI Features.

Personally this would be really frustrating for me, especially given that Nothing has promoted Essential Space as being a feature of the 3a with no mention of an extra fee. I shouldn’t have to pay a subscription to use the phone I’ve already paid for. If we’re really going to do this, it should be a one-time fee, preferably one included in the price of the phone.

This is literally called “Essential Space” which implies it is essential, or necessary. There is even a dedicated button on the phone for this function. Hiding all of it behind a paywall makes zero sense if you’re gonna call it “essential” and dedicate space on the phone for it. I’m not even sure hiding much if it behind a paywall would make sense when the phone itself has a dedicated button for it.

I just got my Phone(3a) and am trying to use Essential Space to see how it works and see how helpful it is. That being said, I do like the dedicated button and the AI and reminders and memory so far. I would like to be able to respond to the AI and add notes or edit a reminder that I’ve already made.

Agree, it is not at the stage for charging yet, but I’m also generally hesitant to pay for more than the free features on an app.

This seems like nothing is trying to immiate the Apple Brand, making it feel like premium. Android users are not like iphone users, they spend there hard earned money reasonably not for some gimmick which can be performed via softwares for free. If nothing move on to make some of it features subscription based it would be highly disappointing for customers like me who has shifted towards this brand.

As a student i say it, this is one of best things i like on my phone(3a), u could say that i brought the phone for it because i can’t remember too much information at once, and i have like a short term memory i can’t remember things too often. this is actually a godsent thing for me, but i can’t actually pay for it, because i’m broke as fuck. you can use advanced feature for paywall but please retain some features for normal users, & no ads please. Thanks for Reading

If this happens, users should be allowed to customize the API endpoint, that way it could be connected to self hosted AI for free. Nothing marketed the phone heavily around this feature, taking it away would be very misleading.
