Welcome to a new (and hopefully) ongoing series of threads amply titled All things… with the aim of allowing different creators to come up with different ideas they’re either passionate about or just really want to discuss.
@suhantm I’d like to include your All Things Formula One into this series if I may, as it fits the bill
This week, I’m bringing up the topic of Morning Routines!
Apparently, there’s such a thing as having a set routine each morning that will improve productivity and happiness. Chances are you’re either a routine-based person, or you’ll just wake up in the morning and start your day in a random order (socks before jeans right?).
I actually have 2 routines, depending on if I’m running or not:
Non-Run Day
a) Wake up, wash, dressed
b) Get kids up, dressed and washed
c) Go downstairs for breakfast and make coffee - this is the first time I will go on my phone, as I have an Ember Mug, so I like to sort out the optimal temp for my coffee 🤓 ☕️
Run Day
a) Wake up, get running gear on
b) Pop ear(1) in my ears and start Spotify/Strava - this is the first time I interact with my phone and watch.
c) Get home, wash, dressed
d) Start from Non-Run Day step b)
Why is any of my routine interesting to you? Well, it demonstrates how and when tech begins to support my day. I also don’t go on my phone first thing in the morning which most people do…
Yes, you can argue that I actually go on my phone to turn my alarm off first thing when I wake up, but the principle is more that I don’t subsequently wake up and sit on it, I literally just turn the alarm off (or snooze a few times).
According to a study conducted by IDC, almost 80% of smartphones users reach out for their phones before doing anything else. Yes, within the first 15 minutes of waking up, 4 out of 5 people check their phones.
That is quite staggering, but not really surprising given today’s smartphone capabilities - they feature everything we need to essentially upload our brain in the morning with all the data we need to start the day. However, there are now studies that claim doing so reduces your effectiveness and productivity for the rest of the day.
What’s important to me first thing in the morning is to make a great cup of coffee (perhaps I’ll do an All things…Coffee) but I completely understand everyone has their own priorities first thing in the morning, of which one might be to scroll through Twitter for an hour, or to message friends and family, or perhaps continue playing a mobile game.
- Do you have a morning routine?
- Do you go on your phone as soon as you wake up?
- How does tech play a role in your day?
- Is there something Nothing could create or support to improve your productivity?
