As someone who’s been riding the Nothing train since the Phone (1), and then upgrading to the Phone (2) on release, seeing the Phone (3) leaks have me feeling strange and confused to say the least.
A lot confuses me, I will break it down into 3 points below:
* They know that the original glyph interface was the unique element of the phone that made it stand out, and the minimalist (somewhat gimmicky) philosophy of its idea is what attracted so many of us to invest into their idea of making tech fun again.
* Phone 1 and Phone 2’s glyph interface design is iconic at this point, I don’t think a single NP1 and NP2 user doesn’t have a picture of the glyph interface in-printed in their mind. (wasn’t that their Intention in the first place? A minimalist form of communication?).
* Phone 1 and Phone 2 made Nothing profitable. It gave them the freedom to experiment with design (CMF, 3a, 3a Pro, etc.) and in turn become further more established.
The leak just makes me so confused…
* If the philosophy was minimalism. How does a dot matrix screen subscribe to that philosophy?
* The whole point was to reduce distractions? from the OS, UI, Colours?
* The glyph interface was simple enough to not be distracting and thought out enough for it to be useful.
How this makes me feel…
For me when look at the design of the of the Phone ½ I smile, and it seems to smile back at me. If that makes sense? Its design is balanced, yet unique. Sometimes I just take the case off to admire the design lol.
Whether or not Nothing will admit it. If the leaks are true they’ve essentially killed the glyph interface that made it unique. And added a tiny screen to another screen.
My genuine thought process about the leaked design is:
* Why the hell am I gonna flip my phone upside to look at a mini dot matrix screen when I have a FHD+ screen that can perform exactly the same things the dot matrix can do but better lol.
* Half the things that matrix will do, can be done by simply lifting up the phone with always on display.
* The leaked design, Its straight up chaotic. Call me petty. But if i were to get the phone 3 that on its own would make me never use the matrix.
Conclusions
* I don’t know how to feel.
* They could have had the best of both worlds, both the glyphs and the matrix.
Guess we’ll find out tomorrow.
