I have a question regarding the battery of the future Phone (1) -aka Abra, after reading this news.
The EU is studying the return of removable batteries in smartphones.
An European directive tabled in December 2020 by the ENVI Committee, which specialises in environmental issues, and adopted on 10 March by a very large majority (584 to 67, with 40 abstentions). The directive still has to go through the EU Council before it can be considered adopted.
What would change?
If the text goes through with its current version, two things will have to change in the coming years:
From 1st January 2024, at the latest, “portable batteries incorporated in appliances and batteries for light means of transport” (scooters, bicycles and electric scooters would be affected) “should be designed in such a way that they can be easily and safely removed by qualified independent operators and replaced with basic and common batteries.”
“Clear and detailed instructions for removal and replacement should be provided” by manufacturers.*
Such a text would therefore force future Galaxy S24 or iPhone 16 devices to make battery replacement easier and more accessible. It remains to be seen how manufacturers will find a way to implement the text without damaging their plans too much. Since the days of removable batteries, some initiatives such as Fairphone have proven that combining modern smartphones with reparability is possible.
What do you think about this news, is it likely to change anything in the project?
