OK…
Now that I understand what the commotion is about… Here are my thoughts…
Personally, I don’t use the lock screen features other than a clock. Those things simply don’t interest me. The reason why I left Apple for Nothing was because I was tired of the lies and the shenanigans. Apple sells their products at a disgusting, premium price for literally the same thing every single year, with no real innovation. Apple lied about “Apple Intelligence“, and sold the iPhone 16 based on that. Now they’re getting sued for false advertising. Then we all discover that Apple is not a privacy-centric company. All their “privacy features“ are literally just smoke and mirrors. To make up for it, Apple releases the iPhone 17 series. All they really did was put minimal effort into an OS redesign and called it “liquid glass“.
It’s still the same old iOS… it still has many of the same bugs it’s always had. And there’s no sign of them changing their ways either.
So I discovered Nothing, and quite frankly, I love it. The concept of having a minimal clean OS experience, no bloat, no BS.
I was at the turning point of never going back.
Now this…
Working for a major carrier in the United States, I understand companies need to make money. They have to turn the profit so they can continue to grow. There are many ways that this can be done. Even if Nothing was doing this for a short term gain, it still goes against everything Carl promised us. So I can see why other users are very upset about this. Basically Nothing is starting to turn the corner of “doing what everybody else does to make money”; sell out to advertisers.
If in fact Nothing decides to allow their users to completely disable or uninstall this preinstalled software, I see no reason to jump ship and cry foul. However, if Nothing forces this on ALL currently released devices and locks down preinstalled software like Samsung does so they can’t be uninstalled, disabled, or worst-case-scenario the user taking the risk of using ADB and potentially bricking their device by removing the offending packages, then yes, I can completely see the full logic and reasoning to drop Nothing phones and get something else.
Despite the public outcry about this decision, there is one fact that everybody seems to be overlooking. Every single Android phone manufacturer does this. They make ridiculous amounts of money just to have a company’s software preloaded on their devices, regardless as to whether or not the user actually takes advantage of them.
So I guess the choice remains, do we stick with Nothing and see what happens? Do we choose the lesser of the evils and stay with Nothing devices? Or do we jump ship to another brand that is literally doing the same thing on a much larger scale?
