NOTHING (Software Team) were actually doing pretty well with updates for the Nothing Phone (1), (2), and (2a) — until the Phone (3a) came along.
But after that, everything started to fall apart. It feels like the software team has completely lost direction.
Now, they’re just doing copy-paste work.
Features that were already available in the Nothing Phone (3) running OS 3.5 are being reintroduced as “new” in OS 4.0. For example, the camera presets from NP3 3.5 showed up again in OS 4.0, and the so-called “Essential Search” feature that was already in OS 3.5 is now being hyped as something new in the “stable” 4.0 release.
It honestly makes you wonder what’s going on inside their software team.
The Nothing software team seems completely unable to manage or deliver meaningful updates anymore. Sure, it’s not easy to push updates across so many devices — but the problem is deeper. Their entire focus right now seems misplaced — on the Essential Key and their new Playground website — instead of actually improving the OS experience.
Let’s not forget: when Nothing OS 3.0 launched last year, they introduced the Smart App Drawer (in beta).
Guess what? Even after an entire year, it still shows as “Beta,” even in Nothing OS 4.0 Beta. That’s just embarrassing.
And then there’s the Nothing Gallery app — completely pointless. No AI features, no modern touch, just an empty shell.
Honestly, Nothing is turning into exactly what its name suggests — nothing.
The software, which used to be their biggest strength and identity, is now the weakest part of the entire brand.
Other brands are moving forward with smoother performance, smarter features, and meaningful innovation, while Nothing seems stuck in a loop of aesthetic minimalism and empty promises. Apart from the monochrome UI and widgets, there’s nothing truly unique left about Nothing OS.
At this rate, it’s hard not to question the future of the company itself.
