Hey everyone and the Nothing team,
I’m writing this post not as a cheap rage-rant, but as a sincere appeal to the team and a voice for the Phone (2) community.
Let’s be honest: those of us who bought the Phone (1) and Phone (2) are the early adopters. We were the ones who took a gamble on a young, unproven brand, generated the word-of-mouth hype, and funded the growth of this company by buying its absolute best hardware. We supported Nothing when it was just an ambitious idea, not an established player.
My Phone (2) is barely two years old in my hands. Its Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 handles everything effortlessly, and performance-wise, it still runs circles around most mid-rangers.
While I completely understand the official 3-year OS update policy—meaning Android 17 isn’t officially coming to the Phone (2)—the release of Nothing OS 5.0 creates a really frustrating paradox for the early supporters.
The biggest, most iconic visual redesign in Nothing’s history (the new Lucent theme, blur effects, and separated control panels) is skipping the former flagship entirely, while lower-tier mid-range devices like the 2a series get to enjoy it simply because they launched a year later. Watching a device with superior hardware get left behind aesthetically—while budget options get the brand-new look—feels like a slap in the face to the core community that helped build this brand from the ground up.
We aren’t asking Nothing to break its Android OS version contracts or magically port full Android 17. However, I want to formally request that the team considers a way to respect the users who bought into the flagship vision:
A backported UI skin: Adapting the core Nothing OS 5.0 visual language (themes, widgets, and blur effects) to run on top of Android 16 for Phone (2) users.
Standalone UI updates: Releasing the updated system apps, Control Center, and lock screen styles directly through system app updates or the Play Store.
Telling us to “just install a custom ROM” isn’t a solution for a daily driver—it breaks Google Play Integrity, banking apps, Google Wallet, and security features we rely on every day.
Nothing built its entire brand identity on design, transparency, and listening to its early community. We didn’t just buy a phone; we backed the brand. We just want our flagship hardware to look and feel like part of the Nothing family for as long as its power clearly allows.
I know this might be a long shot, but I wanted to leave this request here for Carl and the software team. If you’re a Phone (2) owner who feels the same way, please bump this post.
Thanks for reading.
