Hi Nothing/CMF Team,
I’m a big fan of the CMF Phone 1—love the clean Nothing OS, battery life, and affordable build quality. But I’ve hit a major pain point with the voice assistant integration that makes hands-free use unreliable, especially for quick tasks like setting timers or checking weather from across the room.
The Issue:
On my CMF Phone 1 (running Android 14/15), Google Assistant (now Gemini) responses are locked to the media volume level. There’s no separate slider for assistant audio in the volume panel or settings. When my media volume is low (e.g., during quiet YouTube or music playback), the assistant’s voice comes out too faint to hear clearly from a distance. This defeats the purpose of “Hey Google” for convenient, far-range commands— I often have to walk over to the phone to catch the response or crank up media volume temporarily, which interrupts everything.
On other Android devices (like Pixels or Samsungs), there’s a dedicated “Assistant” or “Gemini Voice” slider that pops up in the expanded volume menu, allowing independent control. Why isn’t this available on CMF? It’s a standard Android feature that should be enabled by default.
Impact:
Hands-free reliability drops in real scenarios (kitchen, car, office).
Workarounds like voice commands (“Hey Google, louder”) only work mid-response and reset after. Third-party apps (e.g., Volume Control) help but feel like a band-aid and add bloat to your lightweight OS.
Requested Fix:
Please add a native separate volume control for Assistant/Gemini in the next Nothing OS update (e.g., Android 15 or 16). It could be as simple as enabling the hidden “AI Assistant” slider in Sound settings or the expanded volume panel. This would make CMF stand out for smart home/office use.
I’ve seen similar complaints on the Nothing Community (e.g., voice assistant volume threads for CMF Phone 2 Pro and Watch Pro 2), so I’m not alone—let’s prioritize this for better user experience!
Thanks for building great hardware—excited for your response or updates.
