And there is nothing wrong with buying something because of the hype, as long as you do at least basic research to find out what is being hyped and by whom - which you seemingly did, so there is nothing to argue about there as you did the right thing.
Personally, I learned about Nothing only around the time of the Phone (2a). Actually, I knew about the company before, but I thought it was the Essential Phone (which, essentially [ehhh], it is). When I was in the market for a new phone a year ago, I made myself a little list of things I wanted to have. And especially what NOT to have:
- A bloatware festival, which immediately ruled out all Samsung phones like the S24 FE (including the insane overheating and terrible battery with that one), the A55, and all Huawei and Vivo phones and such (despite their exceptional cameras)
- AI shoved into everything everywhere (self-explanatory)
- Problems with support and updates (many brands, but not Nothing)
- A locked bootloader
- UI to be as minimal as possible (ideally completely text-based like Hyprland in Linux), so NOT TO BE something “flashy” and “rich-visual” for the purpose of looks and not usability - I don’t even use Windows 11 because of their disaster UI and bloat everywhere, including their obsession with AIAIAIAIAIAIAI everywhere including in the Notepad, they can feel free to f off with that, but I also don’t spend my days looking at the UI in admiration and awe
That was fairly easy to search through. I narrowed it down to the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, Poco X7 Pro, Phone (3a)/(3a) Pro, and Pixel 8. As an owner of the Pixel 8… I ruled that one out because it doesn’t make sense to sell the phone and get the same one, clearly. Then I checked Notebookcheck and GSMArena reviews, made comparisons, and ended up with the (3a). The Moto was a year older with a higher cost (and shorter support), and while the Poco is very fast in benchmarks, it also runs very hot and has its own weird quirks (and bloatware). I was aware of the (3a)'s problem with camera inconsistency regarding skin tones, but I didn’t care (and I still don’t).
My Pixel 8 was superior in the camera department, it can still easily outperform almost all existing phones, but everything else was quite meh, and pushing AI gimmicks into everything is what eventually pushed me away from the phone. Look, I really, really, really don’t need AI to do this or that for me, to live my life for me, or to go on vacations instead of me. I don’t need AI bs to edit PHOTOGRAPHY to the point of making those photos completely fictional, although I know some people can’t wait to grow old and show their grandchildren a huge photo album of things that never happened. All fair there, as everyone can live their life however they want as long as it’s not affecting other people.
So, to make this yapping tl;dr - if I’m spending my own money, which I earned myself, I expect a company to earn that money from me by giving me something good in return. I won’t watch trendy “techtuber” bros shilling some XYZ product and make my decision based on them; I am well capable of thinking on my own and making decisions about my life for myself. I know myself better than MKBHD and others do, I really do. I know what I want, and I buy accordingly. If I want to play basketball with friends, I won’t buy a tennis or rugby ball, no matter how intense the hype is around them, despite of them being balls. Which is how I decided to get the (3a), and as a bonus, it is the nicest one aesthetically, so it fits my run & gun EDC nicely, “masked” and “umasked”:

🤷🏻♂️
Now, as for what exactly Nothing is lying about to their customers (and then blaming them for), I have no idea, to be honest, and if they promise me/us to get some 🐶💩 AI “feature” and I/we don’t get it - I really don’t care, I can type on my own, I don’t need AI “features” to type for me and make me notes etc. when they can’t even do basic math right: https://gemini.google.com/share/f249bd259678

So, good job from Nothing for not giving bs gimmicks, I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Small edit: Spelling and grammar.
