Mistique I agree on the value of the CMF1 and it’s a double-edged sword. I bought 2 of them at £169 each.
However, my hunch is there was very little profit or even zero profit in them. I speculate that NOTHING profits about 10-12% of RRP per handset sold, so they make around £0-10 on each one.
They can’t afford any more dev time supporting this phone. I would expect that it would take a large team months to roll or and test A17 on the CMF1. (You could argue that the CMF2P is quite similar which should make this easier). However, I would assume that the testing alone (not even developing) would eat a good chunk of that profit.
And then there would be endless complaint about low-quality updates. Reputational damage is the direction of travel I see with a CMF1 update and they’ve now met their legally required update cycle.
