Welcome to this month’s photo challenge!
This month we’re going back to basics — all the way back. Monochrome. Nothing else.
Nothing built an entire design philosophy out of two colours, and this month we want you to push that idea to its edge. Monochrome isn’t just the absence of colour, it’s what’s left when colour stops doing the work. Shadow, texture, contrast, depth. That’s all you’ve got, and that’s the point. The best monochrome shots don’t just lack colour, they make you forget colour was ever an option.
Your challenge this month is to find the limit. Scenes where dark meets dark, where contrast almost disappears, where detail only reveals itself if you look hard enough. The best shots will reward the viewer for taking a second look, with a story hiding in the second look.

📸 Some ideas to get you started:
- Use the B+W Film preset by selecting the up arrow underneath the shutter button.
- Look for scenes where tones nearly match like a dark jacket against a shadow or smoke drifting across a grey sky.
- Shoot at night or in overcast light, when contrast naturally flattens and texture has to carry the image.
- Get close to surfaces like wet tarmac, rough stone, or textured wood.
- Think about silhouettes where the subject almost disappears into the background but doesn’t quite.
Monochrome only. No colour shots converted in post! Shoot in black and white, or commit to it from the start.
