The design can be submitted in any style you like, even a written post. The important thing is that the idea and story is there.
If you are wanting to use a 3D model, might I suggest the one I have highlighted in another discussion.

How about an extra incentive for you all to submit your ideas?
An interesting quote from the designboom website - For those that unaware, designboom is a credible design publication with over 1.2 million X followers 
The winner of the Hardware Design stage will also have their creation showcased on the designboom website and social media channels.
On the Italian dedicated page the ‘get started’ button is broken, always redirecting to the same page. So if you have the same problem with your country’s page, just change it to the bottom right for example to UK
