Hi, my name is Rahil (flo_rahil in the community)
This is my first community post and I wanted to share my concept.
Introducing my entry for the Nothing Phone (2a) Community Edition.
The entire design story behind this concept is that it pays homage to the past while belonging to the future. A truly timeless piece.
Phones today have limited shelf life specifications-wise, but design wise they can look like they belong to any era.
Carl Pei said something similar in one of the recent Nothing videos that - “Good design should look good not just on day 1 but also on day 100” (Paraphrasing a bit, but I hope the point is conveyed)
I will explain the minute details in the next images…
FRESH EYES. FRESH FOREVER.
Good design is meant to be timeless and to achieve that, is the intention here.
The tagline for the product could be this -
"Embark on a new journey.
Available in the present,
pays homage to the past,
belongs in the future."
Here I explain my design choices in a bit of bento grid aesthetic.
1. FOR THE COMMUNITY.
This is a design that fuels the other stages of the competition. I believe with this design the wallpapers, box art and marketing stages can get really creative and interesting.
2. A NEW DESIGN. A NEW ADVENTURE.
Drawn on top of the NFC coil are two orbits.
This makes the flashlight and the space for screws feel like planets revolving around the eyes.
3. RETRO COLORS. MODERN FINISH. TIMELESS LOOK.
Inspired by the retro colors used prominently during the 70s and 80s, transformed into a modern-day gradient… a timeless classic is born.
4. DETAILS. EVERYWHERE.
From the sublime gradient to the orbit around the eyes and tiny little additions all made with the intent to make the product stand out, but have also exercised restraint from adding too much and moving too further away from the original’s design story.

I am a senior UI designer having a professional experience for around 3 years now. I have done a bit of product design and wanted to craft something to hone my skills a bit as well. This was a great opportunity.
Huge shoutout to the Nothing design team for achieving something amazing with the (2a). The unbelievable amount of creativity that can be explored with this phone is only possible because the base design was so good to begin with. It has so many little components that can tweaked/personalized.
