Also bin ich kurz davor, das Telefon 3A Pro für eine kleine Weile zu kaufen. Alles daran sieht toll aus und ich brauche für das meiste, was ich tue, nicht wirklich Flaggschiff -Macht. Dieses wesentliche Raum -Zeug ist jedoch wirklich nervig. Kann __term_0__ mit ihren vorhandenen und potenziellen Kunden aufhören, Spiele zu spielen, und die Neuapparationsfunktionen bereits hinzufügen? Ich kaufe das Telefon erst, wenn dies geschieht. Warum zum Teufel möchte ich ein Gerät mit einer zufälligen Klick -Schaltfläche, die zu einem Dienst mit begrenzter Verarbeitung/Abonnement verlinkt? Ganz zu schweigen davon, warum Sie all diese Anstrengungen unternehmen, um ein hoch anpassbares Betriebssystem zu entwerfen, wenn Sie die eine schnelle Bewertung auf dem Gerät nicht neu bewerten können? Yeah, I tried “The everything key” as well. However, if I recall correctly, that app doesn’t support remapping the single press of the Essential Key (correct me if I’m wrong).

Currently, I’ve attempted the following workaround:

Set the OS-level single press to a “null” state: SETTINGS > Intelligence toolkit > Essential Key Settings > Activate with Single Tap Before Use = On
Install Button Mapper: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutton&hl=en-US
Remap the Essential Key to launch the Camera app via Button Mapper: This allows the camera to launch successfully while the screen is active.

However, I ran into these issues:

Banking app conflicts: Since Button Mapper is listed under Accessibility Services, many banking apps detect it as a security risk and refuse to launch.
No bypass for sleep mode: It doesn’t bypass authentication from sleep. If I press the button while the phone is asleep, the camera app is technically open, but it only appears after I manually wake the device.

Given these hurdles, I sincerely hope that Nothing CEO Mr. Carl Pei will allow us full, OS-level freedom to reassign the Essential Key.

That has been already requested countless of times already since the 3a series introduced the Essential Key (and Space) about a year ago. So far Nothing hasn’t done really anything to change it and I kind of doubt they’d surprise us with the 4a series introducing such an option.

There is an app called Everything Key by a fellow Nothing Community member available on the play store which lets you sort of customize the option, however it won’t or rather can’t replace the original function.

You can of course also provide your feedback through the official channel, however it is one of those windmill battles where I fear Nothing will stay stubborn in their stance:

Open the settings on you phone -. go to System -> scroll down to feedback -> tap the little feedback icon on the lower right and fill out the form

For commercial reason, Nothing want us to use essential space and they will ignore any request that goes in different direction.

Good idea? bad idea? In the meanwhile I disabled essential recorder entirely, since it is NON essential for me….

Why is there a dedicated hardware key for Essential Space with no option to remap it?

Personally, I have no use for the AI features, and having a physical button permanently assigned to them feels like a waste. Every user has different preferences, and forcing a single function on a hardware key reduces its usefulness.

I used to remap the key using Key Mapper, but many banking apps now refuse to work when accessibility services are enabled, making that workaround impractical.

I’m requesting this again: please give users the option to customize the Essential Key. Even a simple setting to remap it to another app, shortcut, or system function would make the device much more user-friendly.

Not everyone uses Essential Space, but everyone can benefit from having control over their own hardware buttons.

Please enable Essential Key remapping.

I can live with a simple disable the key instead of remapping it. I am misclicking a tool I will never use.

We are now a fair way down the line from the introduction of the essential key, and in all that time, I have not used this button a single time for its intended purpose, I have however accidentally activated it, often daily.

There is a known workaround to remap the key’s functionality, but are we any closer to an official customisation option for this key? It would would be a game changer for what is for the majority of people, a useless feature.

Can you please give us an update on customizing the Essential Key according to our preferences?

It would be great if we could assign different actions and gestures, similar to what other devices offer. For example, double tap to switch between Ring and Silent mode, long press to open the camera, or assign other shortcuts based on our needs.

Please consider this request. It’s not just my opinion. Many Nothing users have been waiting for Essential Key customization ever since the Nothing Phone (3a) was launched. Adding this feature would make the Essential Key much more useful and give users the flexibility to personalize their experience.

I hope you’ll consider this feedback and include Essential Key customization in a future Nothing OS update. Thank you!

For anyone still after a cleaner way to do this: I got tired of the ADB-from-a-PC + Key

Mapper dance, so I made a small free, open-source app just for the Essential Key —

Essential Key Tools.

It maps single / double / triple / long press independently, and the part I cared most

about: you don’t need a PC. It enables the accessibility service and frees the single

press on-device in one tap via Shizuku (Wireless debugging), with manual/ADB fallbacks

and one-tap restore. Double/triple/long press work even without freeing the single press.

It’s open-source, so you can see exactly what the accessibility service does (it only

Pritosh The latest update has already been submitted to Google Play, but it was rejected again due to Google’s AccessibilityService disclosure requirements. I’m working on resolving the policy issue, but I can’t provide an exact ETA because it also depends on Google’s review process. I’ll post an update here as soon as it’s approved.
