adbo I am testing the Nothing OS 4.0 Beta for the Phone (3a) Pro.

A crucial piece of feedback I have is to prioritize adding Ultra Wide camera support for third-party applications like Snapchat and Instagram.

Currently, many social media and third-party camera apps do not allow users to access the ultra-wide lens. As ultra-wide camera functionality is standard in nearly all competitor phones, this is a major feature that needs to be addressed in this significant OS update.

Please integrate the necessary support to ensure users can fully utilize all rear cameras within their favorite applications. Thank you for considering this for the Nothing OS 4.0 official release.

adbo While i was trying to fix the search stopping screen in the settings, i accidentally uninstalled Google play service’s updates instead of Google Play Protect Services. Now my playstore isn’t working 😭 is there any way to fix this

I’m happy to have discovered that Essential search has become fully fledged with features for 3a devices in this beta, resembling what it was meant to be instead of a generic app library search bar.

DuckRogers does it Provide AI results similar to phone 3? Or just Searches the whole phone, (can it answers question like “capital of spain” like Phone 3’s search can?) coz in my Phone 3a, still that essential search with AI results is missing.., though it can answer calculations

Lock Glimpse

Appreciate new features, but this one feels a bit like an ad pop-up.
I really hope the “display own photos on the lock screen” feature arrives soon to replace it.
If I’m not mistaken, it’s currently powered by Vilykke (a third-party app), and I hope that won’t be the case in the future.

App Icon Redesign

Most icons look clean and distinct — I like the overall direction.
The Gallery icon feels a bit too simplified for me.
Love the small creative touches like the umbrella icon for Weather — finally, something other than clouds.

Extra Dark Mode

Feels a bit incomplete at the moment — even Nothing’s own widgets don’t fully adapt to it.
It would be great if third-party widgets (like Google’s) could also be forced into the extra dark color mode for a more consistent look.

Playground

This is a very special feature with real potential.
I’m genuinely looking forward to the day it’s open to everyone — its growth will definitely rely on collaboration with the wider community. There are many creative minds out here, and I can’t wait to see a bloom of ideas and apps in the future.
For now, I don’t use widgets from Playground because they can’t blend into my home screen color scheme yet.

Overall Thoughts

The current features don’t quite feel as “worth the wait” as described.
Would love to see more customization options, such as:
- Adjustable clock sizes on the lock screen (instead of just more clock styles)
- Resizable Nothing widgets (not limited to 2×2, maybe up to 2×6)

Hi Nothing Team,

I recently tried the Nothing OS 4.0 Beta on my Phone (3a Pro), and I have to say—it’s an excellent update. The new Extra Dark Mode feature is a great addition, and the Essential Apps are absolutely brilliant. I genuinely love how refined and thoughtful this update feels.

I do have a few feature suggestions that I believe could make OS 4.0 even more complete:

1. Full App Icon Customization:

The ability to individually change app icons within a selected icon pack—for example, choosing a different icon for the Camera app while still using the Nothing icon pack.

2. Lock Screen Clocks as Home Screen Widgets:

Allowing the lock screen clock styles to be used as widgets on the home screen would add both utility and aesthetic flexibility.

3. Enhanced Material You Theming:

The current Material You implementation feels a bit subdued. Introducing more vibrant and dynamic colors could better express Nothing’s design language while keeping it uniquely minimal.

Thanks for continuously improving the Nothing experience—I’m really enjoying this update and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Features i would personally use:

-Playground

-Intellegence Toolkit

-Essential Search

-Stretch Preset

-Still deciding on Extra Dark Mode

Features that are great to have but personally won’t use:

-Lock Glimpse

-Still deciding on Extra Dark Mode

Negatives:

-Lacking Functions

-New Gallery Symbol

All other symbols are fine but i heavily dislike the new Gallery Symbol it doesn’t fit in at all

Improvement Idea:

I know this is a Beta and Nothing is all about minimalism and anti-bloatware but in my opinion Nothing OS 4.0 is lacking a lot of the exciting Android 16 customization Features. It would be nice to at least have an Optional App which allows to get the full Android 16 experience (Kinda like GoodLock) on stable Release

Edit: I just noticed the Miniplayer change and imo it was better without the Picture being greyed out

There are no AI functions like Galaxy Ai and Mind Space and Super Customisation options and looks like Oxygen Os, iOS ans One UI. The Settings app is not working properly. The control center should show name of every toggle beneath. There are no fluid animations and there are some lags everywhere. The whole UI looks very old, not like modern ones. Nothing should mix its uniqueness and modern looks!!!

The issue is known and being investigated by the team

In the meantime here’s a temporary fix:

Go in Settings -> Apps -> Show all apps then search for “Google Play Protect Service” -> 3 dots in right corner and Uninstall updates

MergingCultures I got the same error, to fix it you need to go to Settings → Apps → See all apps → tap ⋮ (More) → Show system → Google Play Protect Service → ⋮ (More) → Uninstall updates, then confirm with OK.

Nothing promised us a bloat free OS and now they’re walking straight into the same trap as Realme, Xiaomi, and Infinix…we must prevent that.

Customization Features i’d Like to see the most in Nothing OS would be

-Symbol customization:

Material You improvements, Setting the Symbols yourself (some Icon Packs have difficulties selecting the Symbol and you can’t even fix it yourself)

-Widget customization:

Background colour Change to Match Extra Dark Mode, Material You or custom Symbols, Transparent Background would also be cool

-Lock Screen clock

Thanks for the beta update! When I add the Essential F1 calendar widget, it is somehow cropped??

And I can’t add another Essential Widget! The widget limit has been reached but I only have two??

Updated my 3a Pro today. So far so good. The smoothness is noticable and welcoming. Would love to see more interesting additions in the future. Will check on the battery life and update.
