pollenjh That “replacement of everything” was an idea of some other people where I replied those quoted comments, because some of them genuinely believe how easy it is to replace all Google services like YouTube etc., replace them completely with Nothing’s alternative(s); so not just apps, but those whole services.
Then we’re getting to apps as just apps; some apps can’t work as Google won’t allow that (YouTube, YouTube Music and such), some can like Messages (minus Google’s RCS for chats unless you’re a big dog like Samsung), and Gmail (K-9 client is still GOATed though), but in the end we (well, Nothing) are just trying to re-skin/theme existing apps for the sake of changing how they look, and also remove some useful functionality.
All that takes time, money, and a lot of efforts, so if guys at Nothing want to go that route then I have nothing against that, but they also have nothing to gain at all from that because potential new buyers won’t buy a phone because it has a sexy-looking file manager app or anything like that 🤷♂️
Regarding Essential OS, they said they’ll stay on Android, and even if they went away from it that would definitely mean certain death because they would be fighting against this:

I can bet anything I have that 99% of people don’t buy a new phone/tablet/laptop just because of how nice those look but also for their OS and features, and with phones they want to also use them with other people, and not stay isolated in a community of a potential 0.0001% market share. Would you use Essential OS if not a single app was compatible with it - including any existing messenger and browser - but some random Nothing apps? Rhetorical question. But again, if they (Nothing) want to go that route that’s their own choice. If Microsoft failed to win that battle with pretty damn great Windows on equally damn great Lumias, then this… Yeah.
If they expand that Essential OS as a total skin of a whole current Nothing OS then I see no problem with that, along with any existing Nothing’s replacement for any existing non-Nothing app.
