Ich habe gerade das Nothing Phone 4a Pro von Amazon in den USA gekauft. Ich bekomme sehr, sehr langsame Verbindungsgeschwindigkeiten und einen Geschwindigkeitstest. Ich habe Wi-Fi 7 und 2 GBit/s Glasfaser. Mein vorheriges OnePlus 15 konnte diese Geschwindigkeiten ohne Probleme erreichen. Ich habe bereits einen Netzwerk-Reset versucht. I think I’ve found the problem, at least in my network.
When I completely disable WPA3 and only use WPA2, I can no longer reproduce the problem after several attempts.
From what I’ve found online about this, problems related to WPA3 and WiFi roaming can also be caused by a combination of the WiFi chip in the phone and the access points being used.

volkmnv interesting… the only problem is some routers (like eero) do not let you disable WPA3 since it’s required for 6Ghz, although you can change 5/2.4Ghz back to WPA2. I will give that a go and see what happens.

If this is indeed the case then it might be easier for Nothing to fix the issue, unless it’s an actual hardware problem or incompatibility.

[Edit] Fun fact is the SoC used in the eero units I have are all Qualcomm Dragonwing which you would THINK would be compatible with a Qualcomm Snapdragon modem in a device… 😅

Lexcyn If your office Wi-Fi uses WPA2, that could also support the theory.

volkmnv that theory does check out. My offices Wi-Fi uses Cisco Meraki MR56 APs which only support 2.4/5Ghz and only use EAP for security (so it shows as an open network), so not even WPA2.

Okay, then I’ll report that to support. I just got feedback that the problem is “my environment” (I agree now, that’s disappointing). Hopefully they’ll give it some more thought.

volkmnv disappointing if support really said it’s an “environment” issue. A modern device should be able to support WPA3 without issue.

Lexcyn I hadn’t shared the WPA3 finding at that point, but I did share several other pieces of evidence showing that it’s not a general problem.

volkmnv well it looks like WPA3 was the problem in my case - I forced WPA2 on 5Ghz and watched the phone jump from 6Ghz (which is forced to use WPA3) back to 5Ghz/WPA2 and the handoff happened seamlessly without issue and I continued to get full speeds.

The problem I face now is this is not a long-term solution, since forcing WPA2 on 5Ghz also disables Wi-Fi 7 on that band, so only devices that can use 6Ghz will get Wi-Fi 7… which isn’t a huge issue, but then why did I spend all this money on Wi-Fi 7 network equipment only to force it back to Wi-Fi 6… anyways, I hope Nothing can figure it out.

I agree that this can’t be the final solution. But at least it seems like the root cause has been found. Now we just have to hope for support.

volkmnv support got back to me and from all the info we provided it looks like they confirmed it will in fact be fixed in an upcoming firmware release!

We’ve forwarded it to our R&D team, who are currently investigating the issue and will work on an optimization. It may take some time before a firmware update addressing this matter is released.

The issue has been right on Nothing’s website all along. Select “Specs” and then “Connectivity “. Only WiFi 6 is listed, which means only 2.4 and 5GHz… which are also listed. No WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 which enables 6GHz. This has to be the reasoning behind the handoff issues, right?

So, unless Nothing goes the route of recertification (which has a cost) and re-files with the FCC to classify this as a 6GHz device… we’re stuck. The phone is capable of it, but it’s up to Nothing if it’s in their best interests to do so. With this being a midrange phone, I don’t have faith that they will.

Someone on Reddit questioned multiple Nothing devices and mentioned this forum/thread specifically.

Aaron_sVBSEdfDHC 6Ghz is not the issue though, it was WPA3 on 5Ghz - I disabled WPA3 on 5Ghz and it worked fine. The phone is absolutely capable of connecting to 6Ghz on Wi-Fi 6E but it seemed like the handoff between frequencies with WPA3 enabled was the issue. For what it’s worth, I kept WPA3 enabled on the 6Ghz frequency and kept WPA2 on 5Ghz - I can see the phone connect to 6Ghz when close enough and seamlessly move to 5Ghz/WPA2 now with no bandwidth issues.

This seems to be a WPA3 issue, not a WiFi 7 one since I only have a WiFi 6.

Ok. 6GHz isn’t technically supported although it works. It’s just a matter of WPA3? I see you both have tested, so I’ll leave it alone on my end as I’m concerned that some of my smart home devices (cameras, keypads, etc) will have issues with the security handshake if I downgrade to WPA2. I really don’t want to have to call my ISP to come out to get them running again if something goes awry.

Also like one of you, I received an email from Nothing yesterday that this is indeed a bug that they are working on fixing in a future update and that they would extend my warranty by a week to make the decision if I wanted to keep the phone or not. They assumed I purchased it directly from them and not Amazon. Nevertheless, I’ll keep the phone although today’s the last day to return it.

Aaron_sVBSEdfDHC yeah seems limited to WPA3 since since I’ve changed my 5Ghz to WPA2 it’s been working fine (although my Wi-Fi 7 devices have now switched down to 6E which isn’t a huge deal). One device did need to rejoin the Wi-Fi after this change so far though so YMMV (Roomba).
