Malacatuni yeah, I don’t notice the green tint either and would rather have that additional battery life so I don’t worry about the blacks/greys.

Also, I don’t consume media on the phone as it’s far too small for films and like compared to a tablet/laptop, which are Apple usually as the displays are very good. I still use a 2008 iMac for media consumption and get compliments on the display quality (British rooms are very small and anything larger than 24″ really isn’t needed).

grepGander I think it’s about resource allocation. Adding new features will attract users (and push NOTHING further down their AI development to another device pathway) while fixing blacks is t worth the effort as the consumer is already present. With a limited dev resource, I’d follow NOTHING’s strategy and not fix non major issues like we’re discussing and invest that limited effort in differentiating factors like the Glyph matrix.

There is nothing wrong with that (apart from the fact that it’s a literal flagship, so it would by default require more time and resources than developing a whole new phone like the (4b)), and it’s reasonable to expect. But given the fact that they’re a very small, basically niche OEM, just don’t cheapen out on the single most crucial part of a modern smartphone - the display, no?

They didn’t need to go with Samsung (~$120 per panel, and that price was for Apple, so it would be more expensive for Nothing), but all they had to do was go a step or two higher than whoever was their panel vendor here. The Phone (3) would be more expensive, sure, but it’s not like they’re selling Samsung or Apple numbers of tens and hundreds of millions per year. People who want to buy it would buy it at £749 or £789 base/starting MSRP, there would be no significant difference except that the panel would be better and the overall user experience would also be better.

I mean, there’s a reason why the next cheapest then-current/2025 flagship was the OnePlus at a 24% higher base MSRP (then the Pixel 10 Pro, with 128 GB storage (!), at +49% more), and that’s all fine, it was reasonable to expect cost cutting to get it so cheap. But leaving a poor impression and giving a bad experience to users with something they can literally see with their own eyes (so not talking about random crap benchmark numbers) is not the way to go if you want those users to consider making your next phone their own 😐

grepGander have you watched the video where pre-NP3 relate they;'re discussing the cost of the hardware. There’s an interesting bit where they’re discussing the cost of each component (I might have been Rob and Carl) and explicitly state that they (a) have to pay up front unlike larger companies and (b) can’t always get the best newest harwdare upon release. There’s another video with Rob that shows potential 4a mock-ups about 1 year before release, thus the design is fully locked down 18-months ahead of time.

I think this is where the non-flagship specs come into play on the NP3, especially the 8sg4 and the display. I literally think they couldn’t gain access to the 8 elite SoCs (as the fab … I’m assuming TSMC was sold out for those production runs) and it’s likewise with the displays.

There was analysis on reddit a while showing that major Samsung devices were being made in parallel and NOTHING likely got locked out of that processing pool. I believe they also got locked out of the screen pool as well.

Carl looks quite dejected in that vid when explaining it.

I looked for the video and can’t find it with the amount of energy I want to spend this fine morning.

Hi, I’m testing the OS 5.0 beta. I’ve been testing it for a day, and I recently noticed that the camera app isn’t working properly.

I can’t consistently open the app, and when I do manage to open it, sometimes the entire screen is black and I can’t get the camera to work. I’ve tried switching to 2x and 6x zoom, changing to video mode, and in all cases the screen remains black.

I’ve also tried opening the camera through other apps, such as the ChatGPT widget, but that doesn’t work either. I’ve also tried sending images through WhatsApp, and I’m unable to access or use the camera there as well.

I want to add as well that the Essential Voice in Spanish is way worse than before. It is not translating to english when I ask to and even when directly transcripting my voice is not doing it correctly.

I’m affraid I must go back to the previous OS version until it has a green light

Dvd Well done, I totally second this review!
1. I love the GlyphTimer, use it a lot, and the ability to adjust the Glyph Timer in 15-second increments was a fundamental feature, please bring it back!
Dvd I had mapped the Glyph Timer to “Settings > System > Gestures > Double press power button” and by doing this you can still activate the timer without unlocking the phone. Not a real solution, but maybe a temporary workaround.

Bugs, UI Issues & Feature Requests

I’ve been using Nothing OS 5.0 and wanted to share some bugs, UI concerns, and feature requests that I think could significantly improve the overall experience.

🐛 Bugs / Performance Issues

1. Chrome browser lag

I’ve experienced noticeable lag while using Chrome. At times, the browser becomes unresponsive and websites don’t open properly. This affects the overall browsing experience and needs optimisation.

📱 Navigation Bar & Quick Settings Issue

When using the navigation bar, the Quick Settings/notification panel has noticeably less viewing space at the bottom. The navigation area takes up space, making the panel feel cramped.

On the other hand, when the navigation bar is removed or gesture navigation is used, there seems to be an unnecessarily large black area at the bottom. The spacing doesn’t feel properly optimised.

It would be great if the UI could dynamically adjust the Quick Settings and notification panel to make better use of the available screen space in both navigation modes.

✨ Feature Requests

1. Landscape mode for Always-On Display

Please add support for landscape orientation in Always-On Display. This would be especially useful when the phone is placed horizontally on a desk, charging stand, or bedside table. A landscape AOD could provide a much better clock and information display experience.

2. Essential Key Customisation

One of my biggest requests is to allow users to fully customise the Essential Key.

Currently, the Essential Key feels quite limiting because it is mainly restricted to Essential Space and a few predefined functions. Nothing’s philosophy has always felt focused on giving users a clean and personal experience, so having more control over a physical button would be extremely useful.

It would be great to allow users to assign custom actions such as:

- Camera

- Flashlight

- Screenshot

- Google Assistant / Gemini

- Silent mode

- Do Not Disturb

- Music controls

- Any installed app

- Custom shortcuts or automations

Ideally, different actions could also be assigned for:

- Single press

- Double press

- Long press

A smartphone should feel personal and customisable, and the Essential Key has a lot of potential beyond being limited primarily to Essential Space. Giving users the freedom to choose how they use it would make the hardware much more useful.

Overall

Nothing OS 5.0 has a great foundation, but these performance issues and UI inconsistencies need attention. At the same time, features like landscape Always-On Display and proper Essential Key customisation would significantly improve usability and give users more control over their devices.

Hope the Nothing team considers these suggestions in future updates!

Zac 🛸 Something that came into my mind quickly is the fact that in Lucent theme it only lets you choose adaptive wallpaper colors, but it would also be nice to have a fourth option ,( that never changes ) the Nothing OS red colour because it would be an option for users who like to create that seamless lucent look but with nothing aesthetic(for the default widgets)

Hello ! Im here to report a bug that happened to me right now!

The bug is on google chrome and google, when I try to access the website, the page turns black and it keeps in the same way with only a tiny part of the bar loaded, I tried to restart the phone and nothing changed. But when I tried other search engines (like brave) the problem did not happen. Does someone knows about this bug? and its because the nothing OS 5.0 distribution or an android 17 bug ? (I have a nothing phone 3 and I joined the beta the launch day)

Daniel Hey could you help me out I am facing a similar problem on NP3, my chrome isn’t working, apps are laggy and glitchy sort of, often crashing. And the experience is really unsmooth. Daniel I can’t find the option, there is developer settings but no particular option to handle its on or off mode.

My NP3 has diminished ability to do things over the days. I am unable to use any browser, so much so that I am writing this from my laptop. The camera is unresponsive at times, and every time I restart the phone, my Signal app location gets deleted. I looked into rolling back to 4.1, but I get warning messages that ALL my phone data will be deleted to factory settings. This experience is rather upsetting.
