In my opinion I don’t see any reason why it “deserves” just another upgrade, besides everybody knows the NP2’s hardware will very likely be capable of running Android 18, so it could deserve “just one last” additional update next year… We already had this discussion last year when NP1 owners were fuming about not getting Android 16.
Nothing is pretty transparent when it comes to the update policy of their phones. You can check it on the spec sheet, it is often also mentioned when you click through the phone’s features. Besides there are YouTube videos and written web reviews you can refer to in order to know the update policy before making your purchase decision.
When I bought my Nothing Phone (2) back in July 2023 I was well aware it would only get up to Android 16 and I never once wasted a single second about if, let alone why, it would possibly get further updates. There is no reason at all.
When Nothing starts making exceptions to their policy for just one single device, people cone rushing and demand exceptions for all devices in the future. I already said a few times it’s like opening the pandora’s box or opening flood gates, once done, the requests won’t stop and the community has enough pressuring reasons by just pointing to that one single exception Nothing once made.
If single exceptions are made anyways, Nothing doesn’t even need to specify their future update policies. Like what’s the update policy of the Nothing Phone (5a)? It is “For as long as we feel like! 🙂” or “For as long as you make motivational noise on our community forums!” - that’s not gonna work for a company trying to grow.
