Set Media Player Widget to Open Spotify

Hello everyone. I am a new owner of Phone 2a, and trying to figure things out.

On my home screen, I have the Media Player widget. I want to have that set to open Spotify. But when i click on it, i get a message at the bottom of the screen that says ‘Please open any music app’. I then have to navigate to all the apps to select Spotify.

Can anyone advise how i can get the media player widget to open Spotify?

This is the intended behaviour. The media player just acts as a control panel for whatever media is playing on your device and you will need to start playing some media initially for the widget to work.

Here are a couple of scenarios i’ve tried.

If you switch media applications/sources, the widget will also switch to the currently active one
If you close an app playing media but it has background access and hasn’t been completely closed, you can still play/pause that media
Further to my point above, if you close an app and the widget still displays the thumbnail for the media you were listening to (in my case, a youtube music podcast) you can press it to reopen the app

This is not a dedicated media player for any app in particular, and to my knowledge cannot be set to open a specific application, without meeting the criteria above.

The Media player widget is a joke, really.

Here you can see the official Nothing media player on the left.

And a third party “Music widget” from Play store on the right.

Nothing’s widget picks up EVERY SOUND coming from the phone as music. EVEN WHATSAPP VOCALS! It’s absurd. And there’s not a single way to set an app whitelist.

A music widget should only visualize MUSIC, and perhaps youtube. Not every sound coming from the phone. I don’t want a gigantic Reddit icon in my homepage every time I open Reddit, instead of the last track I listened to like the non-official widget rightfully does.

Also, it resets at every restart of the phone. The non-official widget does not.

Guys, just fix this. It’s a laughable stupid design. It feels like there wasn’t even some bug testing involved before publishing the code. A random app from the Play store works better. C’mon
