If you’ve ever taken a photo of a person you’ll be familiar with the horrible shutter lag the stock camera has - after processing the facial expression will likely shift unless they are perfectly still.

I did an unscientific test on Reddit before to demonstrate this:

Stock camera - around 0.2 to 0.3 seconds shutter lag

GCam - 0 shutter lag (due to Google’s ZSL algorithm)

I am using SGCAM_8.4.400.42.XXX_STABLE_V43

I always expected they’d fix this, but that was never the case… the cameras on the 3a are clearly capable though.

Does this really not bother anybody else or just me?

Recently after updating to Android 16 I feel phone 3a camera processing is to late that is not except from nothing please fix the issue as soon as possible

Hey guys! I’m Nivedh and I’m a smartphone photographer by passion. I’ve been using the nothing phone 3a for the last three quarters of 2025 and here are my observations and suggestions:

Positives:

Good responsiveness and stability when compared to competitors.
Great post-processing capabilities (especially HDR)
Good variety of usable focal lengths are available

Negatives:

Automatically turns on Auto HDR while reopening which is not suitable for every scenario.
Horizontal Panorama in Landscape orientation is not present
Should improve the focus and exposure lock in auto mode sometimes it lags
Improvement needed in the edge detection in portrait mode
Switching between front and rear camera during video recording is not present and is necessary
While switching between 1X and 2X while recording in 4K, it just crops in on the main sensor instead of using the dedicated 2X sensor which is actually capable of 4K recording. This results in poor video quality while switching.

Suggestions (From a professional perspective):

Adding Focus peaking, Histogram, Metering modes in Expert mode
Adding different composition grids in pro mode (a unique feature which no other smartphone brand offers)
12MP and 50MP mode in expert mode is missing and should be added
Outputs from the auto mode is too small in size for editing. Please include a feature where you can control the size of the outputs in auto mode.
Different aspect ratios in videos is not present however I suppose that adding new ratios can be delayed as 9:16 is okay for 90% use cases in my perspective.
Lens easily gets dirty as it is a raised camera island. Please try a flat or any type of camera island which does not get dirty as often as this design

I understand Nothing’s motto of “Not overcomplicating stuff” for the users. But I highly request the Nothing team to look into the above-mentioned suggestions and add it in a separate Expert Cam Application or just add an extension to the existing camera app that can be downloaded from the play store just like we did it for the icon pack.

Hi Nothing Team,

Indoor and low-light video recording on my Nothing Phone 3a shows noticeable grain/noise

even at 1080p 30fps and 1x zoom.

This seems like a video processing / noise reduction optimization issue.

Please improve this in a future camera update.

Shame nobody with a Nothing phone seems to have children or friends apparently because the shutter lag is horrible when taking photos of people

Takes decent photos of random stuff, but any minor movement and the photo shifts a lot.

I just use a GCam port for the zero shutter lag and consistent photo quality

Hi Nothing Community 👋

This morning, while I was eating a banana 🍌, I took a photo using the nothing phone 3a camera. I noticed something unusual in the HDR photos, especially when I look at my face.

There is a white, cloudy layer / haze, almost like white smoke, visible on the face area. This effect appears consistently in all the photos, not just one.

Personally, I feel this might be a camera or HDR processing issue, so I wanted to check with the community.

The Blur-Sensor is not as I expected in Night light/Sunlight the sensor didn’t blur properly and the it also blur the area of the part which I want to remain unblured.. It’s makes the picture non usable as the edge detection is very much bad. Again the picture processing sometimes makes the face contrasty please make it solve by an update. Thank You.
