Looking for a laptop with the following specifications:

Processor: Intel Core i9 U-series for powerful performance with efficient battery usage

not interesting, or personally interested, if it doesn’t run on an ARM-capable chip to run NOTHING OS natively. I’ll stick with macOS for laptops/iMacs, Ubuntu for multi-GPU-enabled workstations and Android for my mobile hardware. Also, Windows is a dealbreaker for me.

Um what a coincidence, we are getting landed into same thread. Suggest me a good laptop which has a great performance for coding but still having a great battery.

IamSanjith I always go with MacBookPro/MacBookAir for portable hardware. I personally like the MBA because they are silent and have excellent battery life.

My previous MBP from 2013 lasted until 2020 and I replaced it the M1 MBA the day it was released for £999 and I’m still using it to type this message.

It’s more than powerful enough and macOS is essential (Li/U)nix underneath so I can use a lot of stuff on Ubuntu and on macOS.

I’m not a programmer though but rather a STEM prof.

I like the MacBook, but I’m concerned about the high service and repair costs. Have you ever had any issues with your MacBook experience? Also, how does sideloading software work on macOS?

I rely heavily on Windows applications, and many of them are quite expensive or unavailable on macOS.

IamSanjith for some required scientific software that’s Windows-only I do dual-boot.

I did have two SSD drives fail in that older MBP but it’s quite easy to open on your own and replace them. Otherwise I never had anything break on them (the SSDs just wore out from being overused). I did have a key break off on the 8yo MBP and my son spilled milk into the screen on my current MBA but hey that’s life.

Also, I had 3500 battery cycles on the old MBP (still help a 64% battery caoacity) and have 1000 on my new MBA (85% battery capacity).

£1k for a machine isn’t so much especially if you get 5y no hassle out of them. Programming is also quite lite demand IMHO.

The point of Nothing phones (Phones?) is not just their aesthetics and balance but the main one - the OS. Nothing OS is a mobile OS, as every Android is. There’s a bit of Linux (~5%) around the globe but Windows is still by far the most used OS. Having a laptop with Nothing’s aesthetics but with Windows/Linux/Unix/RTOS/whatever would realistically make no sense for anyone as there is simply no market to sell and make any profits. I wouldn’t even think about switching from my X1 Carbon even if there was Nothing OS on board of that suggested Nothing Laptop. But I would love to wrap my X1 in a Nothing-themed vinyl even though they already match perfectly together.

Edit: To have a Nothing Tablet or something of that kind would be much better, IMHO. An alternative to iPad Pro around 12.5″, and to a regular iPad also but around 10.5″, so both flagship/expensive and midrange would be covered.

CMF1_hacker Because it’s Android, mobile OS. Even with something like Samsung DeX - it’s still a mobile os, with a desktop-like UI. Can you run Windows native apps on Android? No. Can you run Windows games on Android? No. Can you run specific highly-professional Windows software, such as ABB e-design, on Android? No. How about professional CAD software? Well, also no.

So what would laptop-Nothing OS be then? Yet another distro of Linux? What would be the point of such laptop, sans surfing the web? You can surf the web on any tablet just fine. And you can use current/mobile Nothing OS this very moment on any existing laptop via virtualisation. So…

Edit: Windows on ARM (Flopdragon X Elite and X Plus SoCs) was a failure because of many factors, such as a huge overpromise and major underdeliver after all that hype, then because of their huge overpricing, and more importantly, because they simply lack compatibility with anything not related to basic usage like surfing the web or writing emails (Lunar Lake has equal or better battery life, while packing more performance and absolute compatibility with anything).

Do you remember all their bragging (still on their official YouTube channel) how their X Elite is faster in CPU benchmarks than anything on the market, including M3, M3 Pro, and full-blown desktop i9 (!) and Ryzen 7 7700X lmao. Then it turned that all that lying about performance was definitely far from true.

You can’t even plug an eGPU and use it as a powerful gaming machine and workstation at home, while having a light and still powerful laptop to run & gun around. That’s exactly what I have with my X1 Carbon - 1.1 kg “heavy” laptop with hours of battery life for on the go, and when I get home I plug it to my eGPU and play AAA games in ultra/maxed details at 1440p in 100+ fps.

Can you connect two 4K 120 Hz displays and run them simultaneously with a Windows on ARM laptop? Of course you can’t (but you can with i7 1365U Intel for example 🤠).

With Windows on ARM there is simply no compatibility with anything important past writing/reading/surfing. Literally nothing. Nothing at all. Pretty good watch if you are interested on the matter:

The only reason for using a laptop in STEM really is web browsing and writing paper (or doing emails/meetings) which could easily be done on NOS.

Every biotech/pharma/uni I’ve worked at has an HPC with 10-20 GPUs and everyone has a workstation with 1-4 GPUs and a laptop for writing/emails/meetings.

Android would fill that final gap But this device would likely remain personal.

Right… Because every existing laptop user is in STEM? What about people who work in I&C Engineering, or robotics, like with the mentioned ABB which runs exclusively on Windows?

Where is Linux?

Is gas and steam turbine control something that’s only for peasants (despite being one of the highest paying fields in the world)? Or is ABB some crap name? Is Formula 1, a multi-billion business, also full of uneducated idiots who are somehow unaware of Linux (as, when you watch F1 Grand Prix weekends, you see plenty of laptops in garages of every team, all running Windows), despite being some of the smartest people and engineers in the world?

Very nice generalisation, fully binary it’s 0 or 1, Linux or nothing, there is no in-between. So Nothing OS is supposed to be another distro of Linux? Why the need for a whole laptop then (aside aesthetics)? Chrome OS basically is all you need for that, with Nothing’s skin on top. Or - a phone with a 10€ Bluetooth keyboard to type faster.

I think the Nothing team is very content with using MacBooks and Macs, so there probably isn’t any plans for a Nothing computer any time soon. They are mainly focusing on redefining smartphone interactions and AI on a mobile scale. I don’t even know what they could bring to the market that would even feel special. A Nothing tablet on the other hand…

Edit: And also the addition of, or rather lack of anything better than USB 2.0 seems like more proof that Nothing aren’t very interested in creating a desktop experience because that doesn’t have video output, which is kind of required for the new desktop mode coming with Android 16.

Nah, mate, that’s all boring work that uses established technologies. I mean if collecting a salary and do generic stuff is you’re thing then it’s great.

Most innovative stuff works on non-windows stuff, but continue talking about generic jobs if you want to.

Which I what I used at CERN (mostly custom Linux).

I guess I wouldn’t consider doing bog standard infrastructure jobs as STEM jobs, but, hey, you may. Paychecks are important, thankfully I haven’t had to go the bog standard route as of yet (almost 50).

Nice way to define a whole Formula 1 as a generic job 😂 All existing EV/ICE innovation and progress (including batteries!) in all consumer everyday cars is coming directly from there, including heavily improved safety (materials), whole brakes-tech is coming from F1, tyre also, because all major names in car business are pushing the limits in F1, then translating that to regular cars (like Mercedes is doing, or Honda, or Toyota before, or… you name them). Of course all of that with a delay of 10-15 years, but that’s just a generic job, lmao!
