My first introduction to Nothing was the Ear (1).
It was the first product that really felt like it was made for me: nice design, okay audio, mid-level quality, and an amazing price. Not perfect, but just enough. Later, I got the Phone (1), and that was an amazing decision. Over the last four years I’ve followed Nothing’s journey—from a small company to a well-known and respected tech brand. I loved almost every product they made because it felt like they were building for people like me: those who want a good product at a fair price.
But since the release of the Ear (open), something has changed. It feels like Nothing no longer cares about that original mission. Seeing the Phone (3) was when I realized it clearly: Nothing is no longer… well, Nothing. And now, with the upcoming Ear (3), it feels like the company doesn’t even think about its first customers anymore.
The best way to explain this is with the Ear (stick).
When I saw them for the first time, I was amazed by the unique design and the fun opening mechanism. That was Nothing doing what they were best at: making something familiar but giving it a twist. But it was also the last product that truly felt that way. Ever since, Nothing has only made phones and “normal” earbuds. Sure, there are still the cool LEDs on the phones and the transparent earbuds, but nothing truly new.
I was fine with this until early 2025, because those products were still good—like the Phone 3a, 2a, and the Ear (a), which at least brought some color and freshness. But now, it feels like Nothing is only making what they think we want, instead of what we actually want. Let’s be honest: no one asked for the Ear (open). It was an interesting idea, but not exciting. People talked about it for a week, and then everyone forgot about it.
The community wants fun and bold products—like a Nothing speaker or a Nothing watch.
(CMF doesn’t really count, in my opinion.) The point is: Nothing doesn’t seem to understand its own community anymore. For a company that’s all about “community,” it doesn’t feel like they actually see us. And when they do, like with the Headphones (1), it didn’t feel like they made them because it was a cool idea—it felt like they just wanted to say, “See? We listened. Now please be quiet while we sell a weird-looking phone.”
I know this might sound like I’m hating on Nothing, but it’s the customer’s job to be the first to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. I still love Nothing and what they create, but I want them to take a step back and really listen. Not just watch the community and say “okay,” but to truly hear what we want.
In one old video, Nothing said something like: “a community where every voice is heard.”
