For me, the updates regarding Glyph Matrix introduced with 4.0 are really good, however I also never used always-on matrix.
For example Glyph Timer is finally back. It has been such a handy little feature I used multiple times per day on my NP2. I was saddened to see it gone when I got my NP3. They reintroduced it with the same, even slightly improved functionality and the new animation is well done - it strikes a good balance between playfully entertaining and being plain informative as of getting a rough idea how much time has already passed.
The new moon phase toy is great, ever since I got the NP3 with the sun clock toy, I thought having one for the moon phase would be handy.
The fact we can now access a toy database and browse for new ones right from the settings menu is a great quality of life improvement.
So not everything regarding the matrix changes in 4.0 is bad - far from it.
