Hey everyone,
Some of you might remember Project Essential, the custom Linux distribution concept I was working on a while back to bring the signature Nothing aesthetic over to the desktop. I ended up putting it down because building an entire OS backend completely from scratch by myself was a massive grind.
But I’m back, I have a new community account, and Project Essential is officially being revived as a full, bootable operating system.
I’m dropping the complicated backend headaches and focusing 100% of my energy on what we all actually care about: the design. ### The Vision for V1:
The Base: A rock-solid, stable foundation (GNOME-based) so the installer and hardware compatibility work perfectly out of the box.
The Aesthetic: Strict monochrome UI styling, native Space Mono/NDot typography integration, and that signature 4% window transparency over custom backgrounds.
Zero Bloat: Minimalist, clean default apps (like Amberol for audio and Kitty for the terminal) to keep the system blindingly fast.
I am working on baking the core configuration into a bootable ISO right now so you can actually flash it to a USB and run it on your own hardware.
This isn’t just a concept anymore—we are building a real ecosystem. I want this to be a true community-driven project. If you are a designer, a widget maker, a wallpaper creator, or just want to help test the early builds, drop a comment below.
Let’s build Nothing OS for PC. Stay tuned for the first Alpha ISO drop.
